 Educated by his mother at home  Religious education from the monks of Paisley Abbey  He had 2 brothers, Malcolm Wallace Jr, and John Wallace  William practiced sparing and sword play with his brothers  Williams hobbies were sparring, hunting, swords - manship, and horsemanship  When 18 traveled to Dunipace to further education  Wanted to have a job in church

 Most men in Scotland wore kilts  William wore a kilt  Wore traditional knights helmet with feathers  Had an iron chain shirt  He wore some pretty weird tights  Sported a big beard and mustache  Overall he looked like a warrior

 From the late 1200’s to the early 1300’s England was trying to conquer the world  The old saying was that the sun never sets on the British empire  England was conquering many different European countries  When they got to Scotland they had their hands full

 Scotland was occupied by English  Internal chaos  The nobility where fighting for power  Mercenaries from many countries occupied Scotland  Irish, Welsh and English aligned with cause of day  Wallace’s father was killed by the English in a skirmish

 In 1297 Wallace started fighting  In the southeast corner of Scotland Wallace was involved in a fight with the British  He killed many soldiers but was then overpowered  Thrown into the dungeon to starve  Locals nourished him back to health  When healthy he recruited 30 more warriors and continued with his attacks  In May, 1297 with many new soldiers he avenged his fathers death  Ambushed and killed the knight responsible and some of his guards

 Most famous for his sword  4 feet 4 inches long  Weighed 6 pounds  2.25 inches thick at the handle .75 inches thick at the point  In battle the tip of the sword was cut off  If the sword still had the tip it would be 5 and ½ feet tall  The actual sword is on display in Scotland today

 Wallace escaped being captured until May 1305  Sir John De Menteith, a Scottish loyal knight, captured him  After trial, sentenced to a horrible execution  He was hung, drawn and quartered  His entrails were burnt before his eyes  His head was mounted on a traitor’s post  Limbs were sent to different places

 Thought of as many things: Hero or traitor  He is one of the main reasons for Scottish independence  He lead the Scottish resistance  Fought and by the end of the 13 th century won independence for Scotland  He was topic of the movie “Braveheart” starring Mel Gibson  If it wasn’t for Wallace who knows what Scotland would be
