BOATING TERMINOLOGY

Definitions Port Side-The left side of the boat when looking forward. Starboard Side-The right side of a boat when looking forward. Bow-The forward part of a boat. Stern-The after part of a boat. Waterline Length-The length of the portion of the boat which touches the water

Definitions Continued Overall length- The overall part of the boat from bow to stern. Beam-The greatest width of the boat. Freeboard-Distance from water to top of bow. Draft-Depth of water a boat draws. Flare-The outward curve of a vessel's sides near the bow.

Definitions-Continued Topsides-The sides of a vessel between the waterline and the deck; sometimes referring to onto or above the deck. Transom- The stern cross-section of a square-sterned boat. Forward- Toward the bow of the boat. Aft- Toward the stern of the boat.

BOATING TERMINOLOGY

Navigation Continued NAUTICAL MILE - One minute of latitude; approximately 6076 feet - about 1/8 longer than the statute mile of 5280 feet. KNOT - A measure of speed equal to one nautical mile (6076 feet) per hour.

NAVIGATION -The art and science of conducting a boat safely from one point to another. This is accomplished by using correct terminology, safety procedures and boating rules.
