What is Multimedia? Multimedia is a combination of text, art, sound, animation, and video. It is delivered to the user by electronic or digitally manipulated means. A multimedia project development requires creative, technical, organizational, and business skills.

Introduction to Multimedia Multimedia becomes interactive multimedia when a user is given the option of controlling the elements. Interactive multimedia is called hypermedia when a user is provided a structure of linked elements for navigation. Multimedia developers develop multimedia projects

Introduction to Multimedia The software vehicle, the messages, and the content together constitute a multimedia project. A multimedia project shipped to end-users with or without instructions is called a multimedia title. A project can also be launched on the Web.

Introduction to Multimedia Multimedia projects can be linear or nonlinear. Projects that are not interactive are called linear. Projects where users are given navigational control are called non-linear and user- interactive.

Introduction to Multimedia Authoring tools are used to merge multimedia elements into a project. These software tools are designed to manage individual multimedia elements and provide user interaction.

WHAT IS NEW MEDIA STUDIES A range of new forms of digital art. Any type of application which explores the intersections of computing, science, the humanities, the visual and performing arts to transfer information via digital techniques, computerized systems or data networks.

WHAT IS NEW MEDIA STUDIES Some preferred technology-based art, media art, or digital art for the contemporary situation of the digital medium. Simply, the term New Media refers to a combination of traditional media, and from multimedia, which consists of digital versions of traditional techniques.

BRIEF HISTORY The concept for new media technology started in the 1960s. With the rise of modern computer technology, the idea of information exchange through the medium became a powerful application. In the modern world (1980s): the developments of computer graphics have brought digitally the general artwork (in e.g.: drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture) through photography, film and television. In example: digital-based artwork and video games Thus slowly technologies replacing traditionally mediums, through the implementation of personal computers and video game systems (most are interactive) and contain compressed data designed to be accessed in a variety of markets. Examples: Internet- based concepts like websites or digital mediums such as CD-ROMs and DVDs.

First Generation - 1940-1956: Vacuum Tubes Second Generation - 1956-1963: Transistors Third Generation -1964-1971: Integrated Circuits. Fourth Generation - 1971-Present: Microprocessors. Fifth Generation - Present and Beyond: Artificial Intelligence New Generation - Present and Beyond: New Media

THE DIFFERENCES Differences Old Media New Media Principle mode Uses tell methods. Emphasize on arrangement and layout of text Uses visual images, camera angles, animation or voice over to explain story Visual style Uses words, formats, etc to present the text Uses angle, graphics, frames, animation to present text Reading pathway Mostly linear and sequential Complete opposite of old media. Provide opportunity for audience to interact

Virtual Reality (VR) Virtual reality is an extension of multimedia. It uses the basic multimedia elements of imagery, sound, and animation. It requires terrific computing horsepower to be realistic

Augmented Reality Augmented Reality allows the user to see the virtual objects superimposed upon or composited with the real world. Things to do: Ask Mr Google about AR, find examples and how it works. You need to make 1 advertisement on a product and try to embed AR concept on it. Think!. Write a proposal – Please bring complete proposal on next week.
