Birth and Death Born April fifth 1827 Died at the age of 84
Younger Life Came from a Quaker home in Upton, Essex. He initially studied the Arts but at the age of 25 he graduated with honors as Bachelor of Medicine and entered the Royal College of Surgeons. In 1854 he became an assistant to his friend. In 1867 Joseph discovered the use of carbolic acid as an antiseptic and they use them today.
What Did He Do? Joseph Lister was an English surgeon who was known for sterile surgical techniques. Went to University of London University of Glasgow and University of Edinburgh. Discovered the antiseptic technique, which represents the beginning of modern surgery.
Success He made doctors wear gloves and wash their hands with a special solution. Joseph Lister also made a spray for cleaning the surgical materials. Also created anesthetics. Joseph Lister created a cleaner way to do surgery.
