Weather Instruments Science 10 O 2 Level Ms. Bowie

Brainstorm a list of tools that are used to measure weather? Think about the Elements of Weather that we record: Temperature Pressure Wind Speed Wind Direction Precipitation…

Thermometer  Measures temperature How hot or cold it is outside How hot or cold it is outside  Thermometers have different scales  We measure in degrees Celsius!  Our current temperature is: _____

Old Fashion Thermometer  This is Galileo’s Thermometer  Bonus Points for anyone who can find out how it works and report back to me!

Barometer  Measures air pressure  The weight of air pushing on the earth’s surface  Measured in kPa here  Measured in mmHg & mbars

Barometer  How it works:  Why do you think one of the units is mmHg (mm of mercury) (mm of mercury)

Hygrometer  Measures humidity  How much water is in the air?  The units: % Think: h=humidity h= hygrometer

Anemometer  Measures the wind speed  How fast is the wind blowing? Think: Ants= move fast Anemometer= how fast wind is moving

Weather Vane  Indicates the DIRECTION of the wind  The arrow points into the wind  Wind is always described by the direction from which it is blowing

Wind Sock  Indicates the DIRECTION of the wind  Often found at airports

Rain Gauge  Measures the amount of rainfall  It is expressed as mm or cm

TEST OUR KNOWLEDGE What is it?

BAROMETER!

 Katie wants to measure the amount of moisture in the air.  What instrument should she use?

TEST OUR KNOWLEDGE What is it?  Mrs. Hartman plans to go out over the weekend on her new sailboat. First, she must know how fast the wind is blowing to see if it’s appropriate to sail. What instrument should she use?

TEST OUR KNOWLEDGE What is it?  Mrs. Smith wants to make sure that she dresses her baby correctly when she brings him to visit. In order for her to know the temperature outside, what instrument should she use?

TEST OUR KNOWLEDGE What is it?  Mr. Snow just bought a brand new kite and he is anxious to fly it.  Before he flies it, he must know the DIRECTION of the wind. What instrument should he use?

TEST OUR KNOWLEDGE What is it?  A meteorologist observes some cumulonimbus clouds outside. He speculates that there is LOW air pressure.  What instrument should he use to determine the air pressure?

TEST OUR KNOWLEDGE What is it?  Ryan is working on his Science project. He plans to measure the amount of rainfall that has fallen in his neighborhood over the past two weeks.  What instrument should he use?

TEST OUR KNOWLEDGE What is it?  Units of measurement: o C
