What is Feminism? Feminist theory is one of the major sociological theories, which analyses the status of women and men in society. They do this with the aim of bettering women's lives. Feminist theory focuses on giving a voice to women and highlighting how women have contributed to society. There are four main types of feminist theory that attempt to explain the societal differences between men and women:

The FOUR different types of feminists attempt to explain women’s subordination in society . They have different perspectives , ask different questions and come to different conclusions: e.g. VICTORIA, SARA, SHARNTELLE AND ELINOR WILL EACH EXPLAIN ONE TYPE OF FEMINISM TO THE CLASS. THE REST OF YOU MUST MAKE NOTES ON WHAT THEY HAVE SAID, AS THEY WILL BE TESTING YOU TO SEE WHAT YOU LEARNED!

Liberal Feminists want very gradual change in society Liberal Feminists want very gradual change in society. Liberal Feminists see that because of CULTURE and ATTITUDES of society, women do not always get the chance to excel in the workplace. If they want to stay and be successful at work they must sacrifice time with their children. It is because we are SOCIALISED in to different gender roles from birth that this discrimination exists. WHAT DO WE REMEMBER ABOUT GENDER ROLE SOCIALISATION? SEX DISCRIMINATION ACT (1975) & THE EQUAL PAY ACT (1975) were heavily supported by Liberal Feminists. Liberal Feminists try to get rid of sexism and stereotypical views of females in children’s books and the mass media.

Radical Feminists are radical in every way, shape, form and view Radical Feminists are radical in every way, shape, form and view. They believe that society and the way in which we are SOCIALISED, is very negative. Generally men are the enemy What types of beliefs do you think they have? What types of things might they do?

Marxist Feminists believe that it is not men that oppress women it is the capitalist system. Women must remain subservient to men. (This basically means women must remain in an inferior position to men). According to Marxist Feminists: women ‘see to the needs’ of the men in their lives and refresh them in order that they can go back to work the next day, renewed and invigorated. Even domestic violence is the fault of the capitalist system. The poor working class men need someone to vent their frustrations on… What are your thoughts on this

Postmodern Feminism: This was set as homework last lesson- 2 of you will feedback what you found. Try and make links to social class. E.g. Marxism Feminists and capitalism

LO: To identify the different types of feminists and their views on social class Grade D: To identify the different types of feminists which exist and provide basic explanations of their beliefs Grade C/B: To explain the different types of feminists and why they differ in opinion regarding social class but identify the view which is held by all feminists. Use key terms and show your own opinion Grade A/A*: To explain and analyse the different types of feminists and explain why they have different views on society. Can explain why feminists all hold the same view regarding gender role socialisation. Use a good amount of key terms

What do all feminists agree on? Gender- role socialisation is not natural and benefits males at the expense of the females!!

patriarchy it is a system of male dominance - basically, a system where men have the power. Examples early 20th century when women could not vote, have certain jobs, etc because men controlled the power. Another example is religions wherein the central authority figure is male. Write the definition into your glossary in your own words!

LO: To identify the different types of feminists and their views on social class Grade D: To identify the different types of feminists which exist and provide basic explanations of their beliefs Grade C/B: To explain the different types of feminists and why they differ in opinion regarding social class but identify the view which is held by all feminists. Plenary: For each type of feminist, write what you think their view on social class may be. Make sure you have defined all key words in your glossary!
