A natural waxy substance produced by the liver Adults produce all they need

Function: Essential for metabolism Aids in digestion of fats and vitamin D production

Types 1.Low density lipoprotein (LDL) Bad Excess builds up on artery walls Narrowing and hardening of arteries Increased risk of heart disease and stroke

2.High density lipoprotein (HDL) Good Picks up excess cholesterol and transports to the liver

Lowering fat intake, especially saturated fats and increasing soluble fibre intake will help to reduce LDL (bad) levels.

Tips for lowering fat intake: Choose lean cuts of meat Trim meat & poultry and remove skin Grill or broil meat (fat will drip off) Substitute low fat dairy choices Choose lower fat foods for breakfast Eat fewer deep fried foods (ie. fries, doughnuts) Limit portion sizes Skim fat layer off soups and stews Limit high fat snacks
