History of AVID AVID began in the 1980’s by Mary Catherine Swanson, an English teacher from Clairemont High School. She developed the program to meet the needs of her student population. About AVID AVID is an elective class here at SEMS beginning in 7 th grade and students continue on to high school. The AVID program is designed to help students to be more successful in school and prepare them for college by developing the necessary skills and work habits.
