was a Spanish explorer and map -maker. De Pineda sailed for the Spanish Governor of Jamaica, Francisco de Garay, who sent him to explore and chart the Gulf Coast from Florida to Mexico in Captain De Pineda and his crew were probably the first Europeans in Texas, claiming it for Spain. One of the regions he explored and mapped was the area around Corpus Christi Bay ; De Pineda entered Corpus Christi Bay on the feast day of Corpus Christi, hence the name. Alonso Alvarez de Pineda

Pineda finds no riches-- Spanish keep looking

Cabeza De Vaca s

Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca In 1529, Cabeza de Vaca crashed on Galveston Island because of a hurricane. He was captured by a Karankawa native tribe and almost became a slave. Luckily, Cabeza de Vaca knew enough about medicine that he was able to heal many Indians. He became known among the tribe as a “medicine man.” When he made it to Mexico he told others about many wonderful cities made of gold

Cabeza de Vaca tells stories of riches-- Spanish keep looking Who would be the first explorer to find and capture these rich cities….????

Coronado Gold! In 1540, Francisco Vásquez de Coronado was placed in charge of a great search to find the City of Gold.

Coronado With 1,000 men, 1,500 horses, mules, wagons, cooks and farm animals, Coronado and his group headed north. When Coronado thought he found the City of Gold, it was only mud bricks reflecting the sun, making it look bright and shiny.

Coronado The city was really a Pueblo Indian village. Coronado did not give up. He kept searching and found more villages and people as he went.

De Soto and Moscoso The presence of natural oil seeps in Texas had been known for hundreds of years before Europeans arrived in the area. Indians in Texas are said to have told European explorers that the substance had medicinal uses.

De Soto and Moscoso In July 1543, the remnants of Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto's expedition, led by Luis de Moscoso Alvarado, were forced ashore along the Texas coast. Moscoso explored East Texas. He reported that the group found oil floating on the surface of the water and used it to caulk (seal) their boats.

Spanish find no easy wealth-no large amount of gold and silver (like in Mexico)— So the Spanish don ’ t pay much attention to Texas until...

La Salle, a French explorer, tries to settle in Texas and establish trading posts in the 1680s

In response, the Spanish build missions and presidios (forts) to protect their prized possession of Mexico from other Europeans. So Texas becomes a buffer zone to keep others away from the gold and silver of Mexico.
