Respite Care Why government supports Care in the Community Why government supports Care in the Community Revolving door of care

Bed-blocking Cheaper Stay in care too long Allegations of low standards in long-stay hospitals BACKGROUND

Care in the Community Care in the Community is when an elderly person is looked after in their own home rather than being in a hospital. There are a variety of services provided like carers, meals on wheels and the doctors may visit to deliver prescriptions.

FREE PERSONAL CARE Community Care and Health (Scotland) Act 2002 We are going to watch another clip. As you watch take notes on what the above act did and why it is important.

Although the idea of community care is admirable there are a number of problems: –Some owners of private medical care concerned with profit rather than care. –Many elderly people remain in their home and do not receive proper medical treatment. Poorly trained people have been employed in some residential homes to save money. CRITICISMS

THE CARE COMMISSION Care services have to follow rules and are inspected by the Scottish Commission for the regulation of care. The intention is that users can get the same standard of care wherever they live. The Care Commission regulates 15,000 care services for adults and children.

CARE IN THE COMMUNITY 1.What criticisms were made of community care in the 1990s? 2.How does the Scottish Government try to improve Community Care across Scotland? 3.Describe the work of the Care Commission. 4.‘The Standard of care in care homes can no longer be criticised.’ Give arguments for and against this view.
