1 Dragon NaturallySpeaking: Training Agenda

What to Expect Goals: Method / Essential Skills / Getting Help Starting to use speech-recognition software is not unlike learning to type AND to use a word-processor: productivity increases as you practice dictating AND learn features. Your training will focus on the basic skills to understand and use Dragon. Note: Though Dragon NaturallySpeaking enables completely hands-free operation of a PC, you can also use your keyboard and mouse if fastest and most convenient for a given task. Although repetitive stress injuries are an issue with some companies the majority of use should be around productivity gains. We will cover the essential skills needed to incorporate speech into your daily work (see below). We will also point out tips and potential pitfalls. You will practice using Dragon NaturallySpeaking in personal work tasks and receive immediate feedback. As we determine which vocal tasks should be a priority, we will start a wish list of customizations.

PHASE 1 – LET’S GET UP AND RUNNING The initial session goal is to work with a new user of Dragon NaturallySpeaking ‘from scratch’. The basics of headset use, user profile enrollment, and microphone control concepts help prepare the user for the next steps. Command and control allows the user to see how Dragon will respond, and gives them a sampling of commands to control various components of their computer. The skill(s) learned through simple command and control take the user to the last sections of learning to dictate, and use Dragon NaturallySpeaking’s correction mechanisms. SUBJECTPOINTS TO COVER HeadsetCorrect connection, Correct placement. EnrollmentUser Profile Creation Process, ASW, Enrollment Mic. ControlSet hot key, Sleep/Wake up, Verbal commanding Dictation I5 points of dictation, punctuation, navigation, numbers Command ICommand and control basics – Applies to all Apps CorrectionSelect and Say, Playback, Read that, Spell that

PHASE 2 – NOW THAT YOU HAVE THE BASICS The second session goal is to give the user enhancements to what they accomplished in the first session. The user understands dictation basics and goes further with the introduction of special characters, and switching recognition modes for different purposes. The vocabulary section introduces the user to custom words and pronunciations to enhance accuracy. Commands are further enhanced with the introduction of simple macro creation using ‘Text-n- Graphics’ macros. The all-important user profile gets further treatment through learning how to import and export the profile, performing a backup, and understanding roaming profile concepts. SUBJECTPOINTS TO COVER ReviewDictation, Correction, Command/Control, Microphone VocabularyVocabulary Editor, Custom Words, Word Properties Dictation IISpecial Characters, Engine Mode Command IIText-n-Graphics Macros User ProfilesImport/Export, Backup Profile, Roaming Profile Use

What To Expect – The Success Curve Productivity Time Hours of Use

How Does Speech Recognition Work? LANGUAGE MODEL Turns syllables into words ACOUSTIC MODEL Turns sounds into syllables

Step #1: Microphone Placement and Control Correct and consistent microphone placement –About an inch away from your mouth –Placed to the side – not in front of – your mouth –Note the white dot or “TALK” indicator

Step #1: Microphone Placement and Control (cont.) How to Turn Your Microphone On/Off –By Mouse –By Voice Command –By Keyboard

Step #2: How to Dictate Talking to a computer isn’t the same as talking to a human – think about what you want to say before you start to speak When you’re ready to dictate, the Results Display indicates that Dragon is working on what you’re saying –Adjust Results Display settings under Tools/Options/View tab Dictate punctuation as you dictate your text –Dragon can be set to automatically format some punctuation New paragraph/new line

Step #2: How to Dictate (cont.) Voice commands are used to tell Dragon to perform an action instead of transcribing your words as text –Pause briefly before and after saying the command –The command text appears in the Results Box with a bold blue border The Dragon Sidebar lists helpful commands Commands can be used to: –Start applications –Open desktop items –Control application windows –Access application menu items

Step #3: Correct Recognition Errors If Dragon incorrectly transcribes something you say –Select the misrecognized text and say "Correct That" OR –Say "Correct" followed by the wrong word(s) to correct on the screen
