A furniture manufacturer produces tables and chairs A furniture manufacturer produces tables and chairs. Each table and chair must be made entirely out of oak or entirely out of pine. A total of 150 board feet of oak and 210 board feet of pine are available. A table requires either 17 board feet of oak or 30 board feet of pine. A chair requires either 5 board feet of oak or 13 board feet of pine. Each table can be sold for $40, and each chair can be sold for $15. Determine how this furniture manufacturer can maximize its revenue (Q5).

Math formulation to Question 5: Decision variables: # of oak table (OT), # of oak chair (OC), # of pine table (PT)and # of pine chair (PC) Objective: Max: TR=(OT+PT)*40+(OC+PC)*15 Constraints: 5* OC + 17* OT<=150 (oak) 13*PC + 30*PT<=210 (pine) Non-negativity and integer solutions

For a telephone survey, a marketing research group needs to contact at least 150 wives, 120 husbands, 100 single adult males, and 110 single adult females. It costs $2 to make a daytime call and $5 to make an evening call. Table below shows the results that can be expected. Because of limited staff, at most half of all phone calls can be evening calls. Determine how to min the cost of completing the survey (Q6).

Math formulation to Question 6: Decision variables: Objective: # daytime phone calls (D), # of evening calls (E) Objective: Min: TC=2*D+5*E Constraints: 0.3*D + 0.3* E>=150 (wife) 0.1*D + 0.3*E>=120 (husband) 0.1*D+ 0.15*E>=100 (single male) 0.1*D+0.2*E>= 110 (single female) E<=(D+E)/2 or equivalently, D>=E Non-negativity
