Look Windwards! The Windward Isles Copyright © 2006 Farming and Countryside Education

The Windward Isles with a special focus on comparing your familiar environment with local areas in St Lucia

Learning Intentions Collect and record geographical information about environments at a range of scales Make decisions and justify your choices Empathise with people from different cultures Appreciate economic influences on place.

Your UK local environment 1.Choose 5 places in your school grounds you value as a group and take photos of them with digital/ disposable cameras. Justify your choices as a group: collaboration, cooperation and negotiation are essential! 2. Homework task: take photos of 5 places in your local area which you value and justify your choices. Let’s get started! from local to global

Children in the Windward Isles… Disposable cameras were given out to 10 children in August They took photos of 5 places in their local environment which they valued and justified their choices. You will now see their photos and justifications.

Mero Beach There are many things for my sea collection. Zoie Timothy Canefield, Dominica

I saw fishes with my new goggles when I swam there! It is a beautiful sandy beach.

Canefield River I like to go there with my friends. We splash and play. There are crayfish. The water is nice and cold.

Old Mill There are trees and flowers. I like it because it has a stage. It is a cultural centre. Long ago it was a sugar mill.

Botanical Gardens I can run freely. I like it because it is beautiful. It has a bush with a secret passage!

I can visit parrots at the parrot research foundation.

I can see the city and the sea. There are many trees and flowers. The President’s office is located in Morne Bruce. It is an historical site. Morne Bruce

Andreas Shaw St Lucia In the village with my sisters Tessa and Clara.

Jimmy’s House I like it here because it is my Uncle Jimmy’s house. He is building it on my Grandmother’s land. He will sell carved wooden ornaments to tourists when he has finished it.

The Rainforest Exploring the rainforest is my favourite hobby. I like playing hide and seek in the big roots of the trees!

The trail to the summit of Gros Piton I have great fun swinging on the vines near the base of the mountain. This is Titus, one of the tourist guides who lives in my village, swinging on one of the vines.

Here is my Dad working in his cassava bread shop. He grinds the cassava and then mixes the flour with spices, raisins and coconut. I like helping him at the weekend- sometimes he pays me for it!

Can you find these places… on a map? in an atlas? on a satellite image? on a globe?

Now your turn! 1.Read about the case study individual you have been given. 2.Try to empathise with this person and imagine what their life would be like where they live. 3.Choose 5 photographs of the person’s local environment which you think they would most value, and justify your decisions.

Transport in the local area: type and frequency Local employment: primary, secondary or tertiary sectors? Country’s climate, local weather patterns Local culture, customs and traditions Think about… How far does the person travel to work/ school? What are their personal interests hobbies? What do they do each day around the house/ garden/ village/ town? What are the human and physical features of their home environment/ local area? What are the unique experiences to be enjoyed in the local environment ?

The Banana Industry Consider the impact and influence of the banana industry on the places valued -are places of value linked to livelihood? -would locals value places linked to banana production? – the ports, depots, farms… - which of the places in the local environments are linked to the banana industry? For how long? Why?

Reflectiveness How have images helped you learn? What resources have you employed in your learning? Which aspects of this project were most challenging? Why? What would you now like to find out?
