Why Having Strong Bones is So Important
Presentation transcript:

What is it? Osteoporosis is a disorder that is common of inflicting in a million Australians in which the bones start to become fragile and brittle leading to a higher risk of fractures than normal bone. Osteoporosis occurs when minerals in the bone start to deplete quicker than consuming them and bone mass decreases.

Concerns of Osteoporosis Osteoporosis affects 1 million people over Australia but women have a far greater risk of developing osteoporosis due to the decline in Oestrogen levels during menopause. As the Oestrogen levels decrease so does the calcium and bone mass that makes the bones strong around 2% is lost per several months and this happens for several years as well. Men also lose bone mass but the testosterone levels decline more gradually so the bone mass stays until later in life. The strength of your bones may go back to your family history so if your family is well known with osteoporosis happening you may need to realize your going to get it no matter what. Gender differences with the disorder: Osteoporosis is more common in women than men with more than twice the rate of being infected as females have a 5.3% of receiving the disorder as men have only 1.2% of being infected.

Incidence of the disorder : In Osteoporosis infected 3.3% of all Australians (726,000 people) it has increased from 1.3% in 2001 and has been stable since Age of people with the disorder: 1 in 5 women over 65yrs will have osteoporosis and 1 in 20 men will experience the disorder as well. 50yrs and above citizens should be careful and have themselves checked out by their doctor. Cultural backgrounds of people with the disorder : Statistics have shown that people who have had the disorder in the family are very highly recommended that they will receive the disorder as well.

What are the risk factors? The risk factors are that your family history involves developing osteoporosis in the past and that may affect you developing it as well. Females are at a big risk developing osteoporosis early due to menopause and they lose a 2% of bone for several years, Males/men due suffer from osteoporosis but it occurs later in their life unless certain factors like family history come in to play. Possible causes for Osteoporosis: -Low Estrogen levels in women -Low Testosterone in Men -Lack of Calcium -Lack of Vitamin D -Smoking and medical conditions

Treatment for Osteoporosis: If you are diagnosed with Osteoporosis any doctor will provide a medicine which slows down the cells which break down the bone cells in your body and speed up the bone repair cells. Other sources prescribed: - The doctor will ensure/ask Vitamin D, Calcium levels as well as exercise is doing well in your life. - Reduce certain lifestyle factors such as smoking and alcohol consumption. - As well as identifying if medications or health issues are at fault. Physical exercise: Physical exercise can also have a positive role to play in order to reduce seriousness to the disorder such as simply walking around your neighbourhood.

Conclusion to disorder: The treatments that are recommended are for people who have trouble consuming the right food and have a habit of consuming the wrong shorts of energy and accumulate bad habits. The treatments are also ensuring that if you do have Osteoporosis that you are checking your medication right of what possible side effects are happening as a result of this medication.
