Ionisation of a solid by ions

Experimental set-up

γ f γ β γ τ  Incident projectile : H, Li, Be, B, C, O, F, Al, Si, Cl, V, Ni, Cu, Ge  Incident charge state  Incident projectile velocity  Incident target thickness dependence  Electron emission from nanostructured targets

Target thickness dependence  γ B (d) = Λ dE/dx β s [1-exp(-d/λ s )]  γ F (d) = Λ dE/dx [1- β s exp(-d/λ s )]- β δ [1-exp(-d/λ δ )]  β s + β δ =1  Λ is a constant depending on the target material, dE/dx denotes the electronic energy loss per unit path length

What next ?  Ion Induced electron emission from solid surfaces is in a “mature” stage  However, still remain some interesting experiments as :  Measurements with “biological” materials (eg tissue equivalent) and incident alpha particles  Measurements with nanostructured materials
