Welcome to Ms. Viera’s Classroom!!!

A Little Bit About Ms. V Arizona Native- Hamilton High School Graduate (boooooo!) Bachelors- Arizona State (GO DEVILS) Hobbies: Reading, traveling, dancing, trying new restaurants, watching horrible reality TV, wedding planning (10/10/15!) Dedicated to the Perry Pumas!!! (I live here…)

H9 Let’s Take Care of Business! Write this down! Composition book due 7/23 Read Syllabus Bring Syllabus Signature Paper COMPLETELY filled out on 7/24 “Letter to Self” assignment due 7/24

E12 Let’s Take Care of Business! Take Out Calendars/Agendas!  Dictionary Entry due THURSDAY 7/23  Syllabus Signature Page due FRIDAY 7/24  Gifted Letter From Parent to Ms. Viera due Monday August 1 st (Pretty much our only opportunity for extra credit for the first Semester- take advantage!)

Let’s Write Together 1. Find someone with a “desk card” that is the SAME color as yours and exchange your “6 Words of Summer” paper with them. (look at the top right corner of your desk) 2. Write an MLA heading with YOUR NAME on the top left corner of this NEW paper. 3. Looking at their 6 words- write a paragraph where you describe how you predict this person spent their summer (can be a real guess…or SUPER SILLY). 4. Highlight each of the “6 words” that you used in your paragraph (you will not receive full credit for this if you DO NOT highlight- or use all 6 words)

On Your Way Out of Class… Submit your “6 Words of Summer” Paragraph to the appropriate class period tray (labeled by period number) Make sure your name is on it! We will read these in the near future!

PASSING MY CLASS:BIGGER PICTURE It doesn’t matter how smart you are. If you aren’t productive, it doesn’t matter.

The First Rule of Fight Club… KNOW IN ADVANCE…  YES! I mark Tardies and Absences.  YES! You get a Tardy Referral at the 4 th tardy.  YES! You are officially “absent” if tardy 15 minutes.  YES! You will make up hours if you are absent too much.  YES! Your phone will be taken if you are using it.  YES! You should clean up after yourself.  YES! You are responsible for all of the above. Not me.

I Will Take Phones for Texting During Class

Food/Gum Policy Food will not be tolerated during class time- eating will result in you picking up trash from my floor after class, and/or a referral. The same rules apply for chewing gum- although instead of picking up trash you will help me clean gum from underneath my desks before/after school.

R-E-S-P-E-C-T When the bell rings it is time to start class- I will always have directions for “getting organized” for the day on the screen- look and READ THE SCREEN each day upon entering the classroom.

ATTENDANCE AND TARDY POLICY Parents have 24 hours to officially excuse an absence or tardy. After 10 consecutive absences or 11 absences in a semester, excused or unexcused, the Perry administration may determine that the student will not receive credit for the course.

CHEATING/PLAGIARISM Plagiarism will NOT BE TOLERATED Any work or tests that exhibit plagiarism will result in a zero on the paper and disciplinary action will be taken.

FORMATTING All word-processed papers and assignments will be formatted with standard MLA headings. Here’s an example of a heading for every single assignment: Student Name Ms. Viera Honors English July

LATE WORK Late work is not accepted. Please STOP ASKING to be the exception to the rule! All work due, assigned, or given as homework on the day of an unexcused absence will not be accepted for make-up and will result in a zero for the assignments. Most assignments will have the requirement of submission to turnitin.com. Failure to submit on time, will impact the assignment just as not turning in a hard copy. (Instructions for turnitin.com are forthcoming.)

Think Before You Speak/Write WHY? I encourage healthy debate- but will not tolerate offensive and insensitive exchanges between you and your peers. I am legally required to report worrisome information that I receive from YOU- if you do not want the masses to know about the party you went to last Friday- DO NOT write about it! You can never be too careful with your words- you never know what struggles your peers may be going through- always be cautious.

Ms. V’s Pet Peeves Bypassing the handouts table Asking me: A. What are we doing today? B. Did I miss anything when I was absent? C. Can I borrow a pencil? D. Can I bring you the assignment tomorrow? E. Do I have to write in complete sentences? F. Do I have to write a rough draft? G. Can you tell me my grade? Talking while I am instructing- I REFUSE to yell over you and will take us all on a journey back to elementary school by holding up my hand and giving you the 5 second countdown signal to quiet down.

AND THERE’S MORE… Student (MONDAY): This is so stupid. This is SO easy. What a joke. Same student (TUESDAY): This is ridiculous. This is WAY too hard.

Tips for Success 1. Come to class 2. Make sure your name is on EVERYTHING you turn into me (MLA FORMAT) 3. Make it a habit to check your grade on Infinite Campus (help me correct human error) 4. Turn in unfinished work for partial credit ON TIME (do not be embarrassed, any points are better than NONE) 5. Keep your agenda/planner organized 6. Attend tutoring! IT IS FREE! NO SHAME! ASK FOR HELP! 7. Consistently check the classroom website/calendar 8. BE A SELF STARTER
