THE GIFT OF THE MAGI Similarities and differences by Rachel Ramos

Main Characters Della Della a lovely and caring person She cared for her husband Jim very much She would also do anything to be with him So she sacrificed her camera Jim Jim a very sweet husband He would come from work early just to be with her He cared for her very much So he sold his car

The Gift of the Magi Similarities Both couples were poor Same names dell a and Jim Both couples are married and madly in love Both sold there possessions Differences Different possessions Got different gifts Both were employed but in the story only Jim had a job. The movie they lived in the 21t h century

Short story Summary In the story the gift of the magi there were these two main characters Della and Jim. Jim was the only employed one. Della was a very nice and caring woman and Jim was very caring as well. They were madly in love with each other and they were married but they were poor. Christmas was coming up and Della wanted to buy Jim something but she didn’t have enough money. So she sold her long and gorgeous hair for a chain for her husbands precious stop watch that was passed on from generation to generation. Jim also wanted to buy her a gift so he sold his stopwatch for a comb for her hair, which was useless since she sold her hair for his present. When they finally showed each other there presents they realized how much they would sacrifice for each other and there happiness.

Movie summary In the movie there was a lovely wife named Della and a loving husband named Jim. They were very poor but still managed to be happy for what they had. They also lived in They both had jobs. Christmas was coming and they wanted to get each other gifts. Jim had a car with no steering wheel and Della had a Nikon camera. These were there valuable possessions. Unfortunately since Della didn’t have enough money she had to work a second job. As she worked this job she was doing very well and was close to getting enough money to buy a vintage steering wheel for Jims car. One day she ruined a nice and expensive shirt by putting it in the wrong machine so her boss had to take her next weeks pay check therefore she wouldn’t be able to buy the steering wheel. So she made a deal with the guy selling it to her and made a trade for her Nikon camera. Then Jim sold his car to buy her zoom lens for her camera. At the end of the day they showed how much they’d sacrifice for there happiness.

Irony Irony was used in both the short story and the movie. Irony is the outcome of events that wasn’t expected to happen. In the story Della sold her hair to buy Jim a chain for his watch and Jim sold his watch to buy Della a comb for her hair which was useless because she had already sold it to buy his present. In the movie Della couldn’t pay the full amount for the vintage steering wheel that was a present for Jims car so she traded it for her special camera. Then Jim sold his car to buy her zoom lens for her camera which was also useless because she traded her camera to pay for Jims present. At the end of the day this showed them how much they loved each other and what they’ll sacrifice just to be together.
