INTRODUCTION TO THE SOUTH AFRICAN SCHOOLS ACT NO. 84 OF 1996 (AS AMENDED) Public schools - ordinary/special/focused schools School Governing Body Elections – - every three years / SGB Elections took place during March parents in majority on the SGB, teachers, non- teaching staff, learners (in high school), principal - SGBs have responsibilities, roles and functions prescribed in the SASA A BRIDGE Community of Practice

WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF THE LEGISLATION The principal must annually prepare a plan setting out how academic performance of the school will be improved This academic plan must be tabled at a governing body meeting by the principal reporting on the progress on the implementation of the plan SGB must support the principal, educators & other staff in the performance of their professional functions A BRIDGE Community of Practice
