AgEd 150 What is it? Purpose!  A career development event designed to promote and create an interest in the vegetable crop industry  To explore career opportunities, skills, and proficiencies in the veg. crop industry

Miles Robinson AgEd 150 Contest Overview  There are four juding classes  Followed by four reasons classes  Finally there is identification, which is worth the most

Miles Robinson AgEd 150 Identification  Eighty specimens are selected from the identification list  These will be any combination of the following  Edible portion of the vegetable  Vegetable seeds  Common vegetable field weeds  Market defects  Evidence of diseases and insect damage  Vegetable plants intended for transplanting  Contestants will be deducted points for spelling mistakes  Full names, given on the identification list, must be used

Miles Robinson AgEd 150 How to JUDGE!  Four classes of vegetables will be judged  Each class has four plates  Judging is based on the quality of the vegetable which will bring the best financial return on the retail market compared to the other vegetables in that class  Each class has the vegetable plates numbered 1 – 4. Students are to place the best quality plate first and the worst last.  When looking at the plates, choose the ones that you would likely buy and look the best to you

Miles Robinson AgEd 150 Reasons  After Judging a class of vegetables, contestants will be required to give oral reasons on why they placed the plates in the order that they did  Reasons must be given orally and without the use of notes  Only one contestant may present their reasons at a time  Always be courteous to the judge  Think of a format to use ahead of time and fill in the blanks after judging the vegetable classes

Miles Robinson AgEd 150 General Notes Contestants are not allowed to touch the vegetables Contestants compete in groups of three or four The State Finals are held at Cal Poly SLO Notes and outside information are not allowed to be used and contestants will be given testing cards and vegetable list

Miles Robinson AgEd 150 Coaching Tips  Find students that have an interest in the veg.  Make flashcards with a picture of the veggie on one side and the name on the other  Have practice at least once a week  Pictures and resources can be found at the USDA website   California Department of Food and Agriculture 
