general information Vietnam has long history of traditional medicine. The origin of Vietnam pharmacy and medicine is starting from folk experiences formed due to the results of struggle for survival between human and pathogenic agents. Traditional pharmacy and medicine is a cultural heritage which is passed from generation to generation and is continuously added by experiences of generations to be more and more comprehensive and scientific.

Viet nam TRM has made a great contribution to the cause of people healthcare both its own and in combination with modern medicine. Many scientific researches at the State or Ministerial or Institute/Hospital level aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of herbal medicines; to set up processing protocols and methods of standardization of herbal medicines; to study for application of TRM non-medication and medication methods in treatment and prevention of common diseases, chronic and persistent diseases… were carried out and highly appreciated in TRM local and international conferences. general information

Viet Nam gradually takes steps to modernize TRM based on the preservation of the national nature of TRM, combining the advantages of both TRM and modern medicine, to contribute to the work of healthcare for community effectively.

basic information on pharmacopeia The latest pharmacopeia in Viet Nam is N o 3. This has been the most comprehensive pharmacopeia ever before. It has 821 monographs (standards) including : 342 monographs of biopharmacy and finished products, 276 monographs of medicinal plants, 37 monographs of herbal drugs, 47 monographs of biology, 119 general monographs and approximately of 5000 chemical substances and test drugs

TRM scientific research Experimental research: research to evaluate the efficacy and safety of traditional medicines in experimental models. Research to develop new products based on the pharmacological active extracts for anti-aging, chronic hepatitis, immunology deficiency cases, ischemia-induced disorders, etc. Research for standardization of medicinal plants.

Pharmaceutical research: inherited from traditional methods for processing and preparing traditional medicines, step by step modernize manufacturing technology of traditional medicine using modern techniques. Application research: research on none-medication methods (acupuncture, acupressure, qi-gong…) and medication (empirical formulae and new formulae) for treatment and prevention of diseases. Historical research and surveys: basically research on the history of traditional medicine, TRM theory. Carry out surveys on Medica-Materia, manpower, and the utilization of TRM in Vietnam. Establish models using a combination of TRM and modern medicine for the primary health care in the community.

Viet Nam needs to produce drugs for the poor domestic items are derived form 346 active substances (while 3392 imported drugs are derived from 890 active substances). Viet Nam are having policy to produce raw materials for drug production (Viet Nam Pharmaceutical Industry has chiefly imported raw materials).

To carry out the investment on growing according to GAP, or GACP. To establish a set of standard samples of medicinal plants, control medicinal materials. To isolate and purify the standard substance. To establish the database on botany classification (taxonomy key, standard fingerprint in classification) To carry out the management of import- export activities To carry out the quality control of medicinal plant samples on the market.
