 Japanese originated from Chinese characters  Chinese originated from Japanese?  Ancient people 3000 years ago

 Both use ideograms  70%-80% with same character meaning  Mistakes often made

 Chinese monosyllabic, Japanese polysyllabic  After WWII both simplified language  简体字 (ji ǎ nt ǐ zì) “simplified Chinese characters”  新字体 (shinjitai) “Simplified Japanese characters” 新字体 (shinjitai)  Katakana, hiragana, kanji

 Hanzi 漢字  Simplified easier to tell apart  Mandarin/Cantonese  多音字 duoinzi “multiple reading characters”

 Kanji 漢字  a, e, I, o, u  consonant/vowel
