The Effects on the Single-Parent Home and the Behavior of Children By: Destiny Wylie

About My Topic I chose this topic because it relates to me on a more personal level. The fact that I am a student/child in a single-parent home. Viewing all the statistics about how people view children who reside in a single-parent environment.

Thesis “ Children who reside in a single parent home are less likely to succeed academically, cope with the outside world, and respond with appropriate behavior than their two parent counterparts.”

Academically Challenges Ruby Sewell and Marc Hauser, social psychologist, believe that social processes in the home are affiliated with the family’s influence on the child’s academic behaviors such as: parental expectations parent styles parent- child communication

Academics Continued The family structure provides security and stability that is most necessary for children. Family structure is considered to be the major cause for dysfunction and low academic achievement amongst children.

Children & Coping Coping is what a person does to avoid, remove, minimize, or “get through” a situation.

Appropriate Behaviors Most single parents struggle to find a conclusion to why their child has a negative response to general behavior. Children show things such as aggression/anger, crying, deep breathing, selective silence, escape, etc. Coping skills exist with every child, but the stress of separation/divorce causes the skills to be threatened or minimized

Two-Parent Households It is said that children who reside in a two parent home or more likely to succeed academically, cope with the outside world, and respond to appropriate behavior than their single counterpart.

Two-Parent Counterparts Academically children of two parent homes are more likely to succeed because of the extra attention every child gets the equal assistance that they need for homework, projects, etc. Coping with children of two parent households normally if the child is going through something it is worked out between the parents. Children of two parents are more likely to cope with the outside world, normally don’t have a problem responding to appropriate behavior.
