CHEMICAL INTERACTIONS INVESTIGATION 1: SUBSTANCES

KEY CONCEPTS A SUBSTANCE IS A FORM OF MATTER WITH A UNIQUE COMPOSITION AND DISTINCT PROPERTIES. CHEMISTRY IS THE STUDY OF SUBTANCES AND THEIR INTERACTIONS.

KEY CONCEPTS CHEMICAL NAMES GIVE INFORMATION ABOUT THE COMPOSITION OF SUBSTANCES (like its ingredients) CALCIUM CARBONATE IS MADE OF Calcium (Ca) and Carbonate (CO 3 ). Sodium Chloride (salt) is made of Sodium (Na) and Chloride (Cl). CHEMICAL FORMULAS TELL THE COMPOSITION OF THE SUBSTANCE. (like an exact recipe) The formula for calcium carbonate is CaCO 3, which means 1part Ca (calcium), 1part C (carbon) and 3 parts O (oxygen).

KEY CONCEPTS A CHEMICAL REACTION OCCURS WHEN SUBSTANCES INTERACT TO FORM NEW SUBSTANCES (PRODUCTS) A REACTION GIVES EVIDENCE THAT STARTING SUBSTANCES CHANGE INTO NEW, DIFFERENT SUBSTANCES. RUST FORMS FROM THE REACTION OF IRON WITH THE OXYGEN IN WATER.

SUMMARY SUBSTANCES CAN BE DESCRIBED WITH – COMMON NAME (TABLE SALT) – CHEMICAL NAME (SODIUM CHLORIDE) – CHEMICAL FORMULA (NaCl)
