What is a Parallel Gospel ? 15

16

17

Why the difference ? 18

Why Four Gospels? Four Portraits of Jesus Christ Matthew For Jews Jesus, Messiah and King “Fulfilled” Mark For Romans Jesus, Sacrificial Servant “Immediately” Luke For Gentiles Jesus, Son of Man Savior of All Mankind John For Jews and Gentiles Jesus, Divine Son of God “Believe” … “Eternal life” 19

Important to note that just because say, Matthew deals with Jesus as the King, doesn’t mean that it does not ever talk about Jesus as a Servant or the Son of Man or the Son of God. We simply say that the MAIN point of the book of Matthew is about Jesus as King. Often we talk about the four gospels as being four parallel gospels, but that’s not necessarily so. There are parallel sections, but they are not all JUST the same. 20

Another reason for the difference is to Whom the book is written Matthew to Jews Mark to Roman Christians Luke to Gentiles John to Jews and Gentiles 21

Things omitted by Mark But in Matthew, Luke or John The CONCEPTION of Elizabeth Luke 1:5 (ASV) 1-25 There was in the days of Herod, king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abijah: and he had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth. 22

Things omitted by Mark But in Matthew, Luke or John The SALUTATION of Mary Luke 1:26-27 (ASV) Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. 23

Things omitted by Mark But in Matthew, Luke or John Mary's VISIT to Elizabeth Luke 1:39-41 (ASV) And Mary arose in these days and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Judah; 40 and entered into the house of Zacharias and saluted Elisabeth. 41 And it came to pass, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit; 24

Things omitted by Mark But in Matthew, Luke or John The BIRTH of John the Baptizer Luke 1:57 (ASV) Now Elisabeth's time was fulfilled that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son. Luke 1:60 (ASV) And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John. 25

Things omitted by Mark But in Matthew, Luke or John The Angel's APPEARANCE to Joseph Matthew 1:18 (ASV) Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. 26

Things omitted by Mark But in Matthew, Luke or John The BIRTH of Christ Matthew 1:25 (ASV) and knew her not till she had brought forth a son: and he called his name Jesus. Luke 2:7 (ASV) 1-7 And she brought forth her firstborn son; and she wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. 27

Things omitted by Mark But in Matthew, Luke or John The GENEALOGY of CHRIST Matthew 1:1 (ASV) 1-17 The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. Luke 3:23 (ASV) And Jesus himself, when he began to teach, was about thirty years of age, being the son (as was supposed) of Joseph, the son of Heli, 28

Things omitted by Mark But in Matthew, Luke or John The Angel appearance to the SHEPHERDS Luke 2:8-9 (ASV) And there were shepherds in the same country abiding in the field, and keeping watch by night over their flock. 9 And an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. 29

Things omitted by Mark But in Matthew, Luke or John The PRESENTATION of Christ in the Temple Luke 2:22 (ASV) And when the days of their purification according to the law of Moses were fulfilled, they brought him up to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord 31

Things omitted by Mark But in Matthew, Luke or John The FLIGHT into Egypt Matthew 2:13 (ASV) Now when they were departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I tell thee: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him. 32

Things omitted by Mark But in Matthew, Luke or John Herod's MURDER of the INNOCENTS Matthew 2:16 (ASV) Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the Wise-men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the male children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the borders thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had exactly learned of the Wise-men. 33

Things omitted by Mark But in Matthew, Luke or John The RETURN of baby Jesus from Egypt Matthew 2:19-20 (ASV) But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying, 20 Arise and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead that sought the young child's life. Luke 2:39 (ASV) And when they had accomplished all things that were according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth. 34

Things omitted by Mark But in Matthew, Luke or John Christ's JOURNEY to 12 Luke 2:40-42 (ASV) And the child grew, and waxed strong, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him. 41 And his parents went every year to Jerusalem at the feast of the passover. 42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up after the custom of the feast; 35
