WHY?
20% TIME Google allows their employers to spend 20 percent of their work time (and resources) on a personal interest project. The idea is to give their employees more autonomy in their work environment and foster more motivation/inspiration for creative work. Gmail, Google Docs, Picasa, and Google Doodles are all products of this time.
