Administrative Stuff (yawn) How rude - I think I forgot to introduce myself. Lecturer: Rob Day Cell Office Kenny Road, Room 200E It would really help me out if you write “PB102” plus the the specific topic in the subject line of your . Office Hours pm Thursdays.

Write your first and last names in BIG letters on a sheet of paper. Fill the whole sheet! I am going to take your mug shot! I am also going to ask for a little information to help me get to know you. You can submit that information in class, or write it at home and it to me. Requests for administrative stuff - please always wait until after the end of the lecture…. I usually have stuff I have to set up before class, so I prefer not to have to deal with problems then.

The lab manual is required. It is available from cop-ez on Neil Ave. Note that there will be some modifications to this manual, so listen carefully to TA instructions. Please accept my apologies for poor synchronization of lab and lecture content… this is an unfortunate consequence of a 10 week class squeezed into 4 weeks.

Berg text optional, biology dictionary suggested. Access to a computer is required for this class. See me if that presents a problem for you. The class web site is: Syllabus and everything else you need is available from the web site.

Note that the final is pretty important. You will have to study to do well in it. Lab worksheets (8 x 10)80 Lab report40 Homework40 Midterm50 Final150 Total360 A perfect circle!

Don’t forget you will have to work twice as hard for half as long in this 4 week class as you would in the regular quarter-long class. Some of the assigned TA’s are out of town for the first week. I will spend a lot of time in lab for the first week, then drop by occasionally after that. We may go on a couple of short field trips during class. Since I cannot lock the door of the lecture room, you will need to bring valuables with you. Leave stuff in the classroom at your own risk.

Unfortunately, plant science necessarily touches on politics because it deals with food supply, economics, land use policy, resource distribution and other issues that directly effect us all. Let’s try to keep our discussion of controversial issues civil and mature. We are only interested in issues here, not personalities. Don’t assume that any argument presented actually represents the views of the person who suggests it, in fact, I challenge all of you to try to present arguments that you DON’T necessarily agree with. I want you to have a positive learning experience in lab and lecture. Please feel free to contact me if there is anything else I can do to help you accomplish that goal.
