Strategizing and Managing Your Job Search Angela Heyroth Daniels College of Business University of Denver

Agenda Overview of career mapping – Steps and processes Create your career map Wrap-up and next steps

Breaking Old Paradigms What is Career Management? Your personal business/marketing plan Your roadmap to success and happiness

The Importance of Career Management Everyone needs a little direction in life Strategize your search Discover your values, skills, and interests Provide a sense of stability and direction Assess your employability Find the thread tying your background and goals together Allow “out of the box” thinking

Steps in the Process Self-assessment Development planning Market scanning Action Planning (and Implementation)

Career Mapping Step 1: Self-Assessment What drives you? What are your values? What are your unique talents? What are your needs? What have you accomplished? What do you enjoy? What don’t you enjoy? How do you need to be rewarded? What environments do you thrive in? What factors are important to you in a job? (geography, rewards, employees, commute, culture, the work itself, managerial style, etc.)

Career Mapping Step 2: Development Planning Where are you lacking? What do you need to get better at? What is your ideal job? Where do you want to be in 2 years? 5 years? 10 years? What goals and objectives do you need to set, and what help do you need to make them come true?

Career Mapping Step 3: Market Scanning What opportunities are available in the broad career market? What challenges and opportunities do you face in light of this? What problems and risks are inherent in this chosen field? What are you willing to put up with?

Career Mapping Step 4: Action Planning What are your concrete and manageable goals? What is your timeline? Target dates? What are your deliverables? What are the risks, obstacles, and benefits? What resources and other help will you need in order to complete each action item? Reward yourself as action items are completed Review periodically and make changes as necessary

C a r e e r M a p Who I am now Ultimate goal Action Plan

Where you are now Where you want to be Action Plan CAREER MAP Development Plan

Create Your Career Map: 20 minutes Be creative and take risks Be realistic and all-inclusive Spend 10-15 minutes now and then another 5-10 minutes sharing it with someone else Resources: Various styles of career maps Values inventory List of core competencies

Next Steps – Turning ideas into reality “When using any map, it’s a good idea to do a reality check and make sure the road still exists, watch out for construction, and follow all precautions. This is only to be used as an aid in planning.” Seek out a board of advisors who make sure you’re on the right track Keep your development plan updated Be aware of all your opportunities and resources Be open to spontaneous opportunities
