Traditions and customs of tea- drinking in England and in Russia

Try to compare these traditions.

The Health Benefits of Tea 1.Tea leaves contain a high amount of polyphenols. Green tea is famous for its calming effect on both body and mind. Tea has potential health benefits in cardiovascular disease and cancer prevention.

China 5000 years ago.

. The British East India Trading Company presented tea as a gift to the King Charles II in 1664. That time tea was indeed a royal gift because its price was high. That time only aristocrats drank tea from porcelain cups, which were very expensive. So, first milk of room temperature was poured in a cup, and then the hot tea. .

Russian tea The history of Russian tea- drinking ceremony began in 1638 ,when Russian Tsar Michael Fedorovich got a special diplomatic gift from Altyun – Khan. Import of tea to Russia began in 1769, when the contract with China was signed. Quite a long time tea was popular only in Moscow.

The History of Russian tea Russian people drank tea from samovars. Samovars were made of bronze and copper.. Samovar is a symbol of comfort, hospitality. Sugar was used only in the form of refined sugar. The High Russian society began to learn English tea traditions. To receive an invitation to the tea party was the opportunity to communicate, demonstrate the exquisite manners, and have a cup of tea and a little snack.

Traditions of tea- drinking in Russia . Russian SAMOVAR is a symbol of tea. . A lot of Russian people like to drink tea with herbs (Raspberry, thyme, Johns’ tea), lemon or with honey, jam, pies, cakes, cookies, sweets. In Russia tea is served after meals and during mid- afternoon breaks.

Russian people like to drink tea with lemon, herbs, and honey. The symbol of Russian tea is samovar. In Russia tea is usually drunk after meals. English people drink tea 6 times a day. The tradition of “5o’clock tea” is very popular. Russian people usually drink tea 3 times a day.

English tea-drinking became a tradition in 1840. English people drank tea from porcelain cups. Russian tea- drinking became a tradition at the end of the19 th century.
