What was the Unions strategy for winning the war. The Union planned to use the navy to blockade southern ports, capture the Confederate capital of Richmond, and take control of the Mississippi River.

Why did the Confederacy expect help from Europe? Southern Cotton was important to European textile mills. The south expected help from its trade partners.

Where and how did General Stonewall Jackson get his nickname? At the Battle of Bull run, someone observed that General Jackson had not retreated but was standing like a stone wall.

What did both sides learn from the Battle of Bull Run? Both sides learned that their soldiers were untrained and that war was likely to be long and violent.

What kind of commander was George McClellan ? McClellan was well organized but hesitant to attack.

What was the purpose of the Union blockade of southern ports? The Union did not want supplies to get through to the south.

What was the United States Navy’s contribution to the war? The navy blockaded southern ports and took control of both ends of the Mississippi River.
