Ch. 18 – Becoming a World Power 1890 - 1913

18.1 - Expansion As European imperialism expanded in the 1800s, the U.S. also looked abroad for opportunities. U.S. imperialism grew because of: Growth of industry / wealth Nationalism Military growth Desire to “civilize” the world U.S. first looks to Central / South America, Pacific Islands and Asia (see map p. 1099)

18.2 – Spanish-American War Causes U.S. supports rebellions against Spain in Cuba and Philippines Expansionists and journalists call for U.S. to act U.S.S. Maine explosion blamed on Spain “Splendid Little War” (3 months long) Effects U.S. controls newly “independent” Cuba U.S. gains Puerto Rico, Guam, Philippines U.S. recognized as a world power.

18.3 – More Expansion US Annexes Hawaii 1898 for business and military reasons. Panama Canal – cuts through Panama for a much shorter sea route from Atlantic to Pacific. Pres. T.
