Cleveland International Film Fest The annual film festival in Cleveland, Ohio started in 1977 consisting of only 8 films over 8 weeks. Since then, it has grown to a very popular event where filmmakers show their films, ranging from different countries and many types of films. In 2013, the festival consisted of 178 feature films and 164 short films. Looking at that number, short films are definitely important and relevant in today’s world.
Types of Shorts These include, animations 2D and 3D, documentaries, experimental, musicals, and travelogues. Animated shorts are popular as fillers before feature length and usually go with animated features. Documentaries Early film was dominated by showing an event and were called “actualities” because they portrayed something real. Used as propaganda films during WW2 Cinema verite was dependent on some technical advances in order to exist. Some popular feature length docs are Fahrenheit 9/11 and Supersize Me.
Musical Shorts Also known as musical featurettes Nearly 2000 Vitaphone short subjects were used ranging from opera singers, Broadway stars, and dancers. Became popular on TV when feature ended and musical footage was used to fill gap “Soundies” an early version of musical video and were three minutes in length usually.
