L3 - Action Adventure – Character Roles Tuesday 5 th March 2013

Guess the Word!

Why? Aims & Objectives Re-cap prior learning of areas we covered last lesson and so far for this unit. Establish what stereotypes exist within the genre in terms of Gender roles and audience expectations. Re-cap Character role theories YOU WILL be familiar with (Propp’s character roles) and introduce some new Character role theory (Monstrous Characters – Neale & Krutnik) Analyse a series of Case Study example from the Action-Adventure genre. Review the learning. A02 – Assess candidates’ ability to analyse and respond to a short, unseen moving image extract using media key concepts and appropriate terminology.

Re-cap what you know already – Starter 3 minutes YOU MUST fill in the gaps for the areas/key terms/theory we have covered so far – YOU SHOULD be learning these in preparation for the exam on June 6 th ! Extension: YOU COULD give examples of Action- Adventure texts/characters (where relevant) to back up your understanding.

‘Genre’ Steve Neale “Genre’s are instances of r_________ and d__________” What does this mean? epetition ifference On your Mini-white Boards, split it into 2 sections (Repetition and Difference) and come up with at least x2 examples of things (codes & conventions) you would expect to see (or may be not see) in the Action-Adventure genre.

‘Genre’ Steve Neale “Repetition alone will not……. attract an audience”

Nick Ro_ _ _ ck: (Sight & Sound – February 2010): “Technology is not only changing the business of film making, but also the importance of s_____” Question: What does this connote? d d i tory

What are these texts (films) all examples of? HYBRID MOVIES

Please get this booklet out if you have not already done so! Quick Fire! YOU COULD be asked to come up to the white board and write down a Code & Convention associated to the Action-Adventure genre!

YOU MUST write down on your mini-white boards the name of the theorist that stereotypes gender roles in the media. John Berger “Men ACT, women APPEAR”

How are the male gender usually stereotyped in an Action-Adventure Movie? Extension - YOU COULD tie in theory such as Propp’s character roles (or John Bergers) to the feedback you provide to me and the rest of the class!. The FEEDBACK you provide will be written on the white board! “Brain Storm” - Task

Or… YOU MUST, in your exercise books, write down the 2 character roles represented in this image according to Yvonne Tasker (1993). YOU SHOULD write down 2 similarities and differences between these 2 character roles.

Or… Wise Guy Tough Guy Feedback – How do we know this?

How are the female gender usually stereotyped in an Action-Adventure Movie? Binary Opposition (Levi Strauss)

‘Terminator 2: Judgement Day’ (1991) Dir. James Cameron John Connor – “Boy in distress” who needs rescuing Binary Opposition (Levi Strauss)

‘Lara Croft: Tomb Raider’ (2001) Dir. Simon West You are going to watch a short scene from the Action-Adventure text (which was adapted from a popular video game). YOU MUST: 1)Identify x3 examples of codes & conventions (verbal, non-verbal, technical) that “challenge” John Berger’s stereotypical view of gender roles. 2)Write down these examples into your exercise books. YOU COULD compare this representation to another female character from another Action-Adventure text.

FEEDBACK

What did you notice about Lara Croft’s (Angelina Jolie) representation in this scene? Mise-en-scene Costume is black – Connotations? Camera Low angle shot of the female protagonist – Connotations?

‘Popular Film and Television Comedy’ (1990) – Steve Neale & Frank Krutnik In most film and television genres, according to Neale & Krutnik, the presence of a ‘monstrous character’ provides the audience with someone to root against. In what ways can a character be perceived as “Monstrous” (Neale & Krutnik)? YOU COULD give examples from your own experiences of consuming film in particular.

‘Monstrous Characters’ (Neale & Krutnik) - Examples

Prove what you have learnt– Plenary 3 minutes YOU MUST write down x2 character related theories you have learnt today. YOU SHOULD stick this on your screen. YOU COULD give x1 more example of a theory/Action-Adventure convention you have learnt today.
