What is Flipping Your Classroom When flipping your classroom, the students first exposure to the knowledge is completed outside of the classroom. This is most commonly done through reading assignments or educational videos. Idea The students focus on the lower levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy outside of the classroom. While in the classroom, the focus shifts to the higher levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy with teacher assistance. What the flipped classroom is NOT! What is a flipped classroomWhat is a flipped classroom? MSNBC

The Research Suggests One particular case study of Clintondale High School in Clinton Township, MI shows some pretty impressive results. When a flipped model was implemented, they found: The English class failure rate decreased from 52% to 19% The Math class failure rate decreased from 44% to 13% The Social Studies failure rate decreased from 28% to 9% The entire 9th grade failure rate went down 33% in one year

Pros of the Flipped Classroom Bare Bones of the instruction is front loaded from the video the night before Examples can be demonstrated in the video Parents are exposed to the lesson Students practice in the classroom with the teacher where help is available, not at home where help may not be available Students take responsibility for their learning Self pacing to support abilities Great for Differentiation

Cons of the Flipped Classroom How do we instruct without being in the room with the students Internet Based or Reading Based How do students access Internet based lessons Time consuming : record, re-record, edit, publish Student didn’t do it

What is Flipping Your Classroom Conventional ClassroomFlipped Classroom Teacher lectures concepts and details Materials include mostly textbooks and workbooks Learning is based on repetition Teacher’s role is directive, rooted in authority Students are exposed to the big idea outside of the classroom and gain exposure to specific vocabulary Materials include short educational videos watched outside of class, hands-on activities in class. Learning is interactive building on what the students already know. Teacher’s role is interactive, rooted in negotiation

Material Possibilities Old –Fashioned Method Easel to hold your lesson boards. Dry Erase Markers Melamine Board 4 x 8 cut 2 x 2 (8 Boards) 1.Write your lecture on the melamine boards. 2.Use the markers to add color and accent information. 3.Put the boards on the easel or white board tray in your classroom. 4.If it takes more than 8 boards, your lesson may be too long. 5.Record yourself delivering the lecture. Ways to Record Yourself Any smart phone that records. Any camera with a recording feature. Any digital video camera. Some document cameras have software that will record. Just use pencil and paper, record, and save. Some interactive whiteboards can record. Some computers can capture your voice when using document cameras or interactive whiteboards. Adding 2 Digit Numbers Adding 2 Digit Numbers Pencil, Paper, Camera

Material Possibilities Another Method You can upload a PowerPoint to your publishing area and the students can download it at home.

Material Possibilities Another Method Camtasia is a screen capture software. As you work on your computer desktop, Camtasia will record everything you do. With a microphone or headset, it will capture your voice. The software has features that add call-outs, transitions, and titles. Adding music is also an option. It takes some practice, but is not that hard to use. About $ Adding Effects in PowerPoint

Lesson Design Tips Not every lesson works as a flipped lesson. Select only 1 objective per video. Put something in the video that helps the class connect. I sometimes use a picture of my dog. Think about phrases you use in your classroom. Look around your classroom for easily recognized objects. The length of the video should be appropriate for the viewer. Up to 7 minutes is a good length for most elementary students. Try to think 1-2 minutes per grade level.

Creating the Lesson Plan, plan, plan before you turn on the camera. Practice, practice, and practice again. Your goal is to record the video in one take. Pre-set anything you plan on using. Plan a follow-up activity for after watching the video.

Posting Your Lesson Where to House Your Video How to Connect to Your Video 1. Give your students the video link URL 2. it to them 3. Place the link on your class webpage 4. Use an Learning Management System
