Know Your Resources! Request: I need some……. Answer: I’m sorry, there’s no money in the budget. Request: The students aren’t motivated by the old materials in the classroom. Answer: I’m sorry, there’s no money in the budget.

Know Your Resources! Request: Can I buy……??? Answer: I’m sorry, there’s no money in the budget. Request: I’m not motivated by what’s in my classroom. Answer: I’m sorry, there’s no money in the budget.

Know Your Resources! Wouldn’t it be great to be able to say… Let me show you something exciting and free!!!

Know Your Resources! Well you can! Time to embrace the new normal. Surfing around for what is free!

People Resources All time favorite is TTAC! They seem to know just about everything, are wonderful people, and have a great lending library. They are a resource for teachers, therapists, and parents. There are specialists in all areas of education … give them a call!

People Resources cont’d You can check out all that your regional TTAC has to offer by going online. From this home page you can select your region for info on training opportunities, resources, and the latest in education.

People Resources cont’d One of the nicest things about TTAC is that they have lots of fun stuff to play with, and let you borrow it … Check out your TTAC Lending Library Region 1 TTAC, where I get to go …

People Resources cont’d Talk with your Occupational and Physical therapists. They’ve probably seen it, done it, or know someone who has. Does your school have any dedicated personnel to Assistive Technology? They can help find the right tool within the technology spectrum. This can range from using sticky pad notes for text support to sophisticated text to speech programs.

People Resources cont’d Does your school have a web site? Take some time to explore and you might find some great stuff. Some good ones to check out …. SET Priorywoods Setsig

People Resources cont’d ITRT’s are great! What is an ITRT? You ask An Instructional Technology Resource Teacher The 2005 Virginia General Assembly amended the Standards of Quality to require school boards to employ one instructional technology resource teacher (ITRT) per 1,000 students Find out if your school system has one and what they can offer to you and your students. They know the latest stuff and may be able to come to you for personal training.

People Resources cont’d

Everybody Knows How To Google What do you do when you want to find out about something? Most people today Google! But there are many search engines to try. Here’s one.

What Do I Really Want To Do With What I Find? Take a moment to think through your goal and target audience. For example: Do you want to… –Teach material and increase student engagement –Have a pre-test review for students –Provide supplemental learning materials

What’s Next? Cont’d Your specific goal and target audience will point you in different directions using different media. - Videos -Literacy supports -Interactive testing sites -Printable materials

Videos …every individual learns differently and thus has a unique learning style. Approximately 20 to 30 percent of the school-aged population remembers what is heard; 40 percent recalls well visually the things that are seen or read; … (Teaching Students to Read Through Their Individual Learning Styles, Marie Carbo, Rita Dunn, and Kenneth Dunn; Prentice-Hall, 1986, p.13.) Remember the saying: “A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words”

Videos cont’d You may be a great teacher but… just about every kid in your classroom would rather watch a video. United Streaming –These can be broken down into segments, pre-loaded, and some even come with lesson plans, teacher guides and quizzes. Brainpop –This has cartoon type characters, topical information for the calendar month, and quizzes NBC News Archives –NBC News collections of video, primary sources, images, mini- documentaries, and text designed for K-12 classroom

Literacy Supports This has got to be one of my very favorites! You can watch a pre-made book, or make your own. Switch accessible and you can choose to have it read to you, or read yourself. Please pre-view the material before you present it in class. This is not a closely monitored or censored website. Not all materials are appropriate to all learners. Tar Heel Reader

Literacy Supports cont’d Storyline Online An online video streaming program, where actors from the Screen Actors Guild read children’s books aloud. Each book includes activities and lesson ideas.

Writing Can Be Fun WordsEye –This is a fun site to show children how powerful descriptive writing really can be. –They call this text-to-scene technology. As you type in your sentence it’s translated into a 3-D picture. Kind of a feisty program, it’s not always real exact, but still pretty cool.

Interactive Testing Sites SOLPASS –Virginia SOLs - Test Practice and Review for Science and Social Studies SOL Tests. Jeopardy Games –Kids love to play Jeopardy

Printable Materials Everybody Loves free printable! Here are a few that are consistently good. childcareland –Activities are geared to Pre-K and K level but are very adaptable for a variety of populations. –Great file folder activities, themed materials, and lots more!

Printable Materials cont’d Tinsnips –This website is a special education resource. They have teaching tools, techniques, activities and worksheets. –Very well organized as to subject, grade level, and lots of activities. –Great lesson ideas that are truly practical.

Printable Materials cont’d Everybody needs a good social story. –This site has pre-made social stories that you can print, and can edit to fit exactly what you need. The Watson Institute –Go to the Behavior Stories –Just about a story for every situation!

Literacy Supports The Virginia Accessible Instructional Materials Center (AIM-VA), will produce and deliver accessible instructional materials for Virginia students with an IEP indicating a need for alternate formats of printed materials.

Last But Not Least … Money Donors Choose a not-for-profit web site, where teachers submit project proposals for materials or experiences their students need to learn. These ideas become classroom reality when concerned individuals, whom we call Citizen Philanthropists, choose projects to fund Fund for Teachers Teacher Toolbag—Grants

But You Didn’t Talk About … For more fun stuff, resources, and great free websites … please go to the Richmond Public Schools pbwiki Educators, Start Your Engines
