E-Publishing Using EPUB and PDF formats for IPads, IPhones and Laptops League For Innovation in the Community College Innovations Conference inn Philadelphia March Asst. Prof. Edward Baker MBA

What is E-Publishing There are many definitions on what E-Publishing. E-Publishing is short for electronic publishing and it means presenting material in a electronic format. This is the simplest definition. In this case it is the distribution of the material that makes it E- Publishing. Whether by the internet’s World Wide Web, Tablet reader like the IPad or smartphone like the iPhone it is the diustribution that make it Electronic Publishing

What are eBooks? As in publishing as a whole, eBooks are books in electronic format which are meant to be read electronically, on an eReader device like the Amazon Kindle, the Barns and Noble Nook, the Apple Ipad and the Sony Reader to name a few.

Why E-publish? First its where are students are – In one study the number of students favoring EBooks went from 53% to 65% in the time period while those who viewed them negatively fell to 35% from 47% in the same time period.one study Second the ereaders are light and small – In many cases the ereader is the smartphone

Why E-publish? Third immediate search and delivery over the internet – Student are able to access there material; instantly and repeatedly without further interaction. Fourth can’t be lost – The student can access the material on the server 24/7

When to use ePub or PDF Use ePub when text is the most important part of your document, for example when you create a book, a report, a paper, a thesis, or classroom reading material. Use PDF when layout is the most important part of your document, for example when you create a brochure, a flyer, or a manual with multiple illustrations.

Using ePub Optimized for iBooks features such as changes in text size, font, and orientation (rotating your device between landscape or portrait). Support for video embedded in a document. in many readers Support for notes (ADE and IBooks.) Navigation using an automatically generated Table of Contents.

Using ePub Smart-fields. (pages, ibooks?) Master/Background objects. (pages, ibooks?) Footnotes (converted to endnotes).

Using ePub Comments. Highlighting (ibooks) Some image effects such as for example shadows Only available for Pages word processing documents. Using Pages and Ibook author video support added (not working big fixes expected 1 st q 2012) Documents created in page layout templates can’t be exported to the ePub format.

Using PDF Preserves all content, formatting, and fonts as you intended. Documents are formatted as either portrait or landscape and do not change. PDF does not reflow when switching the orientation of your device.

Using PDF Users can not change fonts or font size. Greatest Availablibility and disturbution The only way to get documents with floating graphics to iBooks. Support for video through links. No support for notes some book marking No highlighting (yet?).

Preparing to create ePub Documents exported to the ePub format automatically appear with page breaks before every chapter. A table of contents is automatically generated, which allows readers to jump quickly to any chapter title, heading, or subheading in the book. In order to create a meaningful table of contents, it’s important to apply appropriate styles within your document. The ePub reader uses the paragraph styles to determine which items should appear in the table of contents for your book.

Comparison with like technologies

Development Environment “With the recent announcement of iBooks Author in Janurary the world of self- publishing seemed to open up a little wider, especially for authors looking for an easy way to format and distribute their own content.iBooks Author At the same time, people raised concerns about the content restrictions of the iBooks Author tool. According to the contract in iBooks Author, books that writers charge for through the iBooks 2 store are subject to fees, which isn’t new — iTunes does the same thing with apps in the App Store. But the contract also stipulates books created with the Author tool may only be sold in the iBooks 2 store, and nowhere else. While some writers may deem the Apple iBooks store an adequate revenue stream, others may not welcome the regulations.content restrictions of the iBooks Author tool Still, self-publishing holds potential for many authors, especially now that 29% of U.S. adults own some kind of tablet or ereader.29% of U.S. adults If you are a writer who wants to take try the self-publishing route, we’ve assembled a comprehensive chart of all the potential tools available to you, as well as their prices and anything else you may need to know. Are you an ebook publisher using something that didn’t make the list? Please let us know in the comments.”
