Welcome to Science Class September 3 rd ( A), 2014 September 4 th (B), 2014

You will track your first quiz (Rules and Procedures)  Remember this is GLUDED ON FRONT COVER  1. In Objective Box = write Rules and Procedures  2. In Percent Mastery % box = write in % score from your quiz  3. Color in same number of boxes as your score  SEE Example on Board: 90% score so shade in 9 boxes Then you will read in the textbook:  1. DIV (x) Welcome to Project-Based Inquiry Science  2. DIV 3 What’s the Big Question?  Be ready to share….. Warm Up

 Open up the textbook on your desk and review the following pages: 1. DIV ix (Table of Contents)  2. DIV (x) Welcome to Project-Based Inquiry Science  3. DIV 3 What’s the Big Question?  Be ready to share….. Warm Up (5 minutes)

This textbook will remain in the class to be shared with students in other classes You may not write in this book. Did anyone read anything interesting during our warm-up? PBIS Textbook

 Write this down so you do not forget it….  You need to bring in empty cereal boxes for an upcoming activity Homework: Science Class Supplies

 Everyone hold up your textbook now with the cover closed.  Shortly, we will need this book to be held up off your desk  How might we do this? PBIS Textbook

 Open to page Div 4.  Be ready to read if called upon: Div 4.  Here are the materials that you will work with.  Think about what will you do to make this happen. Book Support Challenge

 Let’s read what criteria and constraints are.  Be prepared to read “Identify Criteria and Constraints” if called upon Criteria/Constraints

 Label page 8 of your interactive notebook: 1.1 Book Support Challenge  Add this to your Table of Contents  Define these 2 vocabulary words (page DIV 5)  1. Criteria  2. Constraints  5 minutes 1.1 Book Support Challenge

 How can we organize these to make them easier for us to understand what we have to do? We need to organize our criteria and constraints

CriteriaConstraints Draw this table (below vocabulary) List criteria and constraints for this challenge (2 minutes)

 Be prepared to read the paragraph “Build and Test Your First Book Support” DIV 5  You must meet the criteria and constraints listed  Students have started thinking about how to build a book support; everyone should contribute their thoughts to the group. Get Going!

 We will now be forming groups.  Please listen as I assign you to your group  You will be working in groups of 4.  I will now instruct you as to how groups will be sitting.  Remember your classroom rules! Groups

 Test all ideas out  Decide on your group’s best design and then build it.  You have 15 minutes to build it.  stopwatch.com/countdown/ stopwatch.com/countdown/ Let’s do it!

Let’s make a book support

 Be prepared to read “Communicate Your Work” DIV 5  You are presenting to the students not to me!  Speak loudly and clearly and think about what to say before you say it.  Organize your presentation to answer the questions listed in the paragraph (DIV 5)  When watching presentations-ask the group to explain if you don’t know how their design works.  You have 3 minutes to prepare your presentation  Communicate your work

 I will call on each group to share your results….  If you are presenting, speak clearly and address the class, not me  If you are listening, be respectful and ask questions if necessary  Questions???? Let’s Share

 Each group has 2 minutes to share and 2 minutes to answer questions.  At the end of the presentation let’s discuss whether if the criteria was met within the constraints given.  Learning –Ideas that work and those that don’t work are both important. Why? Let’s Share

 Be prepared to read DIV 6 What’s the Point?

 1 bag = all paper clips  1 bag = all rubber bands  1 bag = all index cards plus your team name!  Questions? Cleaning up!

 Notebooks with name tent inside in wire basket  Baggie with team name and all index cards in blue bin  Teacher gets paper clip bag and rubber band bag on your way out!! Dismissal

 So now you’ve seen lots of designs and considered how each have met or not met the criteria and constraints, you should now reconsider what the criteria and constraints are.  We may want notice things that everyone did that was not a criterion and make it one.  Maybe we really liked one design so maybe we pick out that feature and add it to the list.  Write in your notebook, any ideas that you have for your next design. Now What?
