Bays and Eastern Regions Scout Leaders Conference April 2013 Session 5A

 B.-P. Wrote  “I should be inclined to suggest to Scouters that in addition to the technical details of knotting, lashing, anchorages, etc., there is an educative value in pioneering since it gives elementary training in stresses, mensuration, etc., and also develops initiative, resourcefulness and so on out of local material. It also gives practice in teamwork and discipline.”

 What B.-P. didn’t say is that, if it isn’t done well, it is also “bloody dangerous”!  Since most Scout Leaders recognise this and know their limitations, they seldom give complex pioneering a go.  If you want to have a go (and you really should!) we have provided a selection of probably the best reference texts available.
