RENESENG:Renewable Systems Engineering grant Marie Curie Initial Networks (ITN) Chemical Process and Energy Resources Institute Centre for Research and Technology Hellas Dr P. Grammelis , Fax : Thursday, 28 November 2013 Presentation of CERTH/CPERI

CERTH/CPERI profile (1) The Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CE.R.T.H.), the largest research centre in Northern Greece, was founded in March CERTH is a non-profit organization that directly reports to the General Secretariat for Research and Technology (GSRT), of the Greek Ministry of Development. On March 30, 2012 Chemical Process Engineering Research Institute merged with Institute for Solid Fuels Technology and Applications to establish the Chemical Process & Energy Resources Institute (CPERI).

CERTH/CPERI profile (2)Location Ptolemais Athens Greece Thessaloniki Ptolemais premises Since its foundation, ISFTA was located in AEVAL in the area of Ptolemais, Greece. It was in 2007 that the Institute moved in its private building again in the area of Ptolemais. Advanced laboratory infrastructure is currently under development reflecting the Institute’s increased interest in two major sectors; a)improvement of efficiency and emissions monitoring in power production and b)solid fuels characterisation.

CERTH/CPERI (3)  CPERI is a leading organization on energy and environmental technologies in Greece, promoting the advanced utilization of domestic solid fuels as well as novel concepts for energy production.  According to the results of the latest assessment commissioned by GSRT to an independent international expert committee (2005) Chemical Process Engineering Research Institute received the first position among the 52 Research Institutes of the GSRT that were evaluated. During an earlier similar evaluation (2000) the institute was ranked as a center of excellence on international scale.  ISFTA has been awarded an Excellence (Aristeia in Greek) title in Research and Technology and lies in the 6 th position among more than 40 Greek Research and Technology Organizations supervised by the GSRT. This ranking was held in 2005 and was performed by the Greek Ministry of Development and EU evaluators - a procedure that takes place on a 5-year basis.  Chemical Process & Energy Resources Institute (former ISFTA) is the main Greek organisation for the promotion of research and technological development aiming at the improved and integrated exploitation of solid fuels and their by-products.

Financial Data of CERTH Over 500 scientists, researchers and administrative staff Annual turnover 20mi€ approximately 30% from bilateral collaborations with industrial entities and enterprises 60% from competitive research projects 10% institutional public finance

European Platforms/Collaborations  Coal Advisory Group (CΑG) – Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS)  7 th FP - Energy Committee  Technology Platform for Zero Emissions Power Plants –  RFCS Monitoring and Assessment Exercise – Executive Committee  Biomass Panel of European Technical Platform for Renewable Heating / Cooling  European Power Plant Suppliers Association (EPPSA)  International Energy Agency (IEA)  Carbon Sequestration Leadership Forum (CSLF)  European Association for Coal and Lignite (EURACOAL)  European Energy Research Alliance (EERA) Joint Programme on Carbon Capture and Storage  European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI)  United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) (Energy)
