Event / date: West Balkan NFPs-EEA Coordination meeting / 21 Oct 2014 Author: Anita Künitzer (ETC/ICM) Event / date: West Balkan NFPs-EEA Coordination meeting / 21 Oct 2014 Author: Anita Künitzer (ETC/ICM 1 Security implications of future water use in Western Balkans- follow up project Project presentation

Event / date: West Balkan NFPs-EEA Coordination meeting / 21 Oct 2014 Author: Anita Künitzer (ETC/ICM) Outcomes of the project (finished in 2013) Four explorative scenarios Low climate change impact, sustainable economic growth high climate change impact, sustainable economic growth Low climate change impact, unsustainable economic growth High climate change impact, unstustainable economic growth Conclusions abundant natural resources of the region are in risk of abuse and mismanagement due to socio- economic instability of the region; the stability could not be reached instantly but needs a process involving political and societal changes, including strengthening of the cooperation within the region in future, natural resources are to change in quality and quantity; further management measures will have to be implemented in order to save them from depletion due to climate change the regional and international cooperation should be strong, trans-boundary water management efficient, collaboration and share of knowledge and experience with EU countries permanent, intensive and all-inclusive Indicators & country profiles WB countries compared to the EU/neighbouring countries (STEEP) Hydrological modelling Vardar and Morača case studies

Event / date: West Balkan NFPs-EEA Coordination meeting / 21 Oct 2014 Author: Anita Künitzer (ETC/ICM) Follow-up project (2014–2015) following conclusions made in 2013 (rich natural resources are in risk; future climate changes expected; regional cooperation needed), further development is to follow: 1.dissemination of results and knowledge achieved from the project 2.capacity building 3.additional modelling, with expanding methodology to other environmental topics „integrated environmental assessment“ approach emphasis on floods in future capacity building, modelling (floods of May 2014 confirm the conclusions)

Event / date: West Balkan NFPs-EEA Coordination meeting / 21 Oct 2014 Author: Anita Künitzer (ETC/ICM) Tasks Task 1: Capacity building for Western Balkan countries –country workshops on forward-looking integrated assessment –training on use of open source tools for ecological forward- looking modelling and data-handling Task 2: Web publication of results of previous project –EEA thematic website with published „scenarios and vision“, „country profiles“, „indicators“ Task 3: ETC technical report: Outlook on water and climate change vulnerability in Western Balkans –further development of modelling based on previous case studies (Morača and Vardar catchments)

Event / date: West Balkan NFPs-EEA Coordination meeting / 21 Oct 2014 Author: Anita Künitzer (ETC/ICM) Role of Western Balkan countries (NFPs) Country workshops on forward-looking integrated assessment: one workshop in each country (2–3 days each) six country reports (to be developed in cooperation with national experts) up to 15 participants, including EEA and ETC/ICM experts technical organisation by national partners (NFPs) 2000€ is foreseen to cover minimum expenses (coffee) and primarily for a national expert to prepare some input Training on use of GIS tools for ecological forward- looking modelling and data-handling: one workshop, two participants per country organised by ETC/ICM input data for modelling obtained from available sources (open source)

Event / date: West Balkan NFPs-EEA Coordination meeting / 21 Oct 2014 Author: Anita Künitzer (ETC/ICM) Role of Western Balkan countries (NFPs) Web publication of results of previous project: potential (re)confirmation of results (fact sheets) which are to be published online ETC technical report: Outlook on water and climate change vulnerability in Western Balkans national expert inputs in country reports cooperation at modelling results review and data confirmation
