Respiratory System Pharynx Mouth Trachea Bronchi Alveoli Lungs Alveoli Diaphragm 1 1 1
What does The Respiratory System do? The Respiratory System is the organ system that breathes in oxygen and exhales carbon dioxide. The main organ are the lungs. It is the organ that does so what I said at the top. The diaphragm is the muscle that contracts when you breathe in and when you breathe out it flattens to push the air out after you breathe. Now I will show you in detail how the order the Respiratory System works. 2 2
The Path of The Respiratory System The journey starts with the mouth or nasal cavity. Remember, we can breathe with either one. It goes by the pharynx and larynx(they both have to do with our voice box)and go down the trachea, or windpipe. They reach the lungs and go into either one. They reach the alveoli and there the oxygen-filled air is used and is now is exhaled and is full of carbon dioxide. As I said earlier, it is pushed out by the diaphragm as it expands to full size. 3 3
Your Epiglottis The epiglottis is a little flap of muscle that closes your trachea entrance so food doesn’t go down your trachea. It doesn’t seem like a big deal but it is. Another reason to be convinced of it’s greatness is that is doesn’t seem you can get sick of it(YAY!). I hope you think now it is a big thing in The Respiratory System. 4 4
Trachea The trachea is your windpipe that air goes down into your bronchi and into your lungs. To let you know what it is made of, it is a vertebrae; or bone. It is quite important because if we didn't have one how could we breathe? That's up to you. 5 5
Bronchi After the trachea comes the bronchi. There are probably two but if you count the others that branch off there are probably more. It has most likely the same job as the trachea except this reaches the lungs. 6 6
Lungs The lungs are the most important organ in the respiratory system. We breathe in air and the air passes into the trachea. It goes into either lung through the bronchi and into the alveoli. Then gas exchange happens(I’ll cover that in my next slide). Interesting, right? Quite right if you said yes. 7
Alveoli The alveoli are little parts in the lungs. In this area Gas Exchange happens. That is when the air changes from oxygen to carbon dioxide. ∙What is gas exchange? Gas exchange is where the oxygen is taken to your blood and cells. There it is used and the blood and cells give it the carbon dioxide that comes after they use the oxygen. 8 8
A Comparison of Healthy Lungs and Non-Healthy Ones Unhealthy Lungs The lungs are yes, the most important organ in the respiratory system. This is a pair of healthy lungs where this person never smoked in his life. I am sorry for taking you off track, but see this pair of clean lungs. The lungs are very important but if you treat them badly they might give you lung cancer. They would get that cancer because all that smoke pollutes your lungs and it can turn all the parts in your lungs to die! My first reason to keep lungs healthy is to NOT smoke or try to not get second hand smoke. 9 9
How To Keep Your Respiratory System Healthy One way to keep it healthy Another way to Keep them healthy Don’t Smoke. Smoking is probably the dumbest thing to do ever. It will take about ten years for your lungs to get pink again. I do not think it is a good thing to do because it wrecks up your lungs. Exercise Daily It may seem funny how can exercising keep your lungs healthy? Think about it. Your lungs need a lot of air including your body so if you exercise you basically get more air intake. 10
If you don’t keep your lungs healthy…. 11
This can possibly happen. I suggest that you don’t smoke. 12
