YOUR TEXTBOOK © KAREN CONERLY 2013 Successful students have and use textbooks ! It can be with you 24/7 An important source of information May be used extensively in creating exam questions Is an inanimate object – full of information Your job – turning this information into knowledge by interacting with your textbook in many ways YOUR KNOWLEDGE!

OBTAINING YOUR TEXTBOOK Find out early what textbook(s) are required/suggested. Search for EOPS on Delta’s web site or go to Bookstore Delta College Bookstore: New:Buy or Rent Used: Buy or Rent Local Bookstores – some offer rental programs; most don’t Online Bookstores: New: Buy or Rent Used: Buy or Rent e-Books may be available at less cost © KAREN CONERLY 2013

USING YOUR TEXTBOOK © KAREN CONERLY 2013 Difference between reading and studying your textbook. Build a framework before you read a chapter Start at the end of the chapter Read the summary or conclusion first Look for lists of vocabulary words – write them on index cards, along with their meanings If there are Practice Questions, print or copy these pages to use while you read

READ YOUR CHAPTER FOR THE FIRST TIME © KAREN CONERLY 2013 Notice any Learning Objectives and try to understand them Use the key vocabulary index cards Write the meanings in your own words as you read and understand them – this is useful for later studying Notice headings, words in BOLD, CAPS, or italics Understand all figures, diagrams, tables, graphs, or photos Skim the rest of the chapter, taking breaks as needed While on a break, think about what you learned so far

GET READY TO STUDY THE CHAPTER © KAREN CONERLY 2013 Assemble all your index cards, notes, and copies of practice questions (from the end of the chapter) As you STUDY the chapter, think of it as a Treasure Hunt You want to find the answers to all your questions Make notes of all the answers you find – try to find all answers Now you will have created your own STUDY GUIDE to use in preparing for exams!

WAYS TO USE YOUR STUDY GUIDE © KAREN CONERLY 2013 Form a study group – perhaps reserve a room in the Library Pass these tips on using the textbook to your friends Quiz each other using your Study Guide Carry your Study Guide materials wherever you go Study small amounts and think about them throughout your day If your instructor provides topics for the test Use your textbook’s subject index to find and review them.

REVIEW © KAREN CONERLY Turn your inanimate textbook into live knowledge - YOUR knowledge 2. Study the summary, vocabulary words, practice questions first 3. Read the chapter, looking for the KEY signposts we discussed 4. Study the chapter, taking notes on all key information 5. Create your own STUDY GUIDE – use it frequently 6. Study in a group and quiz each other
