Social Sciences/History Content Exam Study Tips

Getting Started Step 1: Gather Study Materials --Textbooks (Econ, Geog., Ed. Psych, History, Pol. Sci., Soc/Anth—See Library Reserve under Pierce/History for textbooks if you don’t have them -- Study Guides: Download SS/History as well as other Social Sciences Test Framework: Download SS/History

Preparation Step 2: --What kind of test is this? Study for breadth, not depth. --What do they want? “The Best Answer” --How will I know all the facts? “You can’t know everything”

Study Guide Preparation Step 2a: --Create a usable study guide: 2-4 pages per subject matter. --Focus on what the study guide asks for. Look for specifics, terms, etc. in the guide that will help you isolate important information. --Study from the general to the specific. If you can isolate a question to a specific topic, you might know something about the topic without necessarily knowing the “right” answer.

Getting Ready to Take the Test Step 3: --DON’T CRAM --Focus on the test as the last piece of the puzzle. --Take the practice tests to familiarize yourself with the kinds of questions that will appear.

Taking the Test Step 4: --Don’t study the day of the test; get a good night’s sleep. --Take your time. You have 4 hrs. --Take notes on the questions, if you do not know the right answer. Identify topic, era, etc. **FOCUS ON WHAT YOU KNOW** --Isolate possible right answers (2 generally) and ask yourself, who is asking, why, and what do they want?

Assessment When you leave the exam, write down as much as you can remember: types of questions, topics, etc. Build on the outlines you have already made and focus your studying more on the TEST FRAMEWORK guide. Prepare a few hours each week.

Passing the Content Exam This Exam is not a reflection, necessarily, of what you know or don’t know. This Exam is a necessary step toward certification. If you have to take it again, do not get down on yourself. If you have trouble with the multiple choice questions, you might want to continue practicing to build your confidence.
