Introduction Grape fruit contains about 20 to 24 % sugar besides rich in calcium and phosphorus nutrients. Grapes are grown all over the world mainly for wine making (82%), raisin making (10%) and rest for table purpose (8%). However, in India, Grapes are mostly consumed as fresh fruit (80%) and only a limited quantity is utilized for wine production (10%), dry fruits like raisins (10%). Table purpose varieties of grape are mostly cultivated in India.  

Classification of Grape Varieties List of commercial and popular Grape varieties in India: Category Varieties Table Grapes Thompson Seedless, Sharad Seedless, Pusa Seedless, Sonaka. Raisin Grapes Thompson Seedless, Arkavati Wine Grapes Bangalore Blue, Thompson Seedless

Classification of Grape Varieties Commercial grape varieties grouped on the basis of colour and seeds: Category Varieties Colour & Seeded Bangalore Blue, Gulabi (Muscat) Colour & Seedless Shared Seedless, Black seedless White & Seeded Anab-e-Shahi, Bhokari White & Seedless Thompson Seedless, Sonaka.

Anab-e-Shahi It is widely grown in Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Karnataka under different agro-climatic conditions. It is late maturing and high yielding variety (35 t/ha), but highly susceptible to downy mildew disease. Berries elongated, medium large, seeded & amber coloured, Juice is clear and sweet with TSS 18 to 20 %. Fruits have a good keeping quality and used for table purpose. 

Bhokri It is grown in Tamil Nadu and it is susceptible to rust and downy mildew disease. Berries are greenish yellow, medium large, seeded with medium thick skin. It has a poor keeping quality and is used for table purpose. Average yield is 35 t/ha/year.

Gulabi It is grown in Tamil Nadu and It is susceptible to rust and downy mildew disease. Berries are small in size, deep purple, spherical and seeded. The TSS is 18-20%, good keeping quality and used for table purpose. It is tolerant to fruit cracking, Average yield is 10-12 ton/ha.

Bangalore Blue Sonaka Seedless It is grown in Karnataka, resistant to anthracnose but susceptible to downy mildew disease. Berries are small sized, dark purple, seeded with thick skin. Juice is clear and pleasantly flavoured with TSS 16-18%. Good keeping quality and used for making juice and wine.    Sonaka Seedless Sonaka Seedless is Bud-sport of Thompson Seedless grapes. Berries are elongated, yellow coloured with thin skin. TSS 24-26%. Use for Raisin and table purpose.

Thompson Seedless It is grown in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Average yield is 20-25 t/ha. It has wide adaptability, Berries are seedless, elongated, golden-yellow with medium-thin skin. The juice is straw coloured, sweet with a TSS of 20-22%. Good keeping quality and used for table purpose and raisin making.
