To ensure that the children experience a smooth transition from the Foundation Stage to Key Stage One. That the Year 1 curriculum builds upon and extends the experiences that the children have had in Foundation. Learning through play will continue although the children will gradually be eased into more formal learning as the year goes on so that they remain motivated, enthused and eager learners

Maths isn’t just about adding and taking away! Our teachers try to make our lessons as fun and practical as possible. When learning about weights and measures we even have the opportunity to cook – and eat the results!

We enjoy writing poetry, fiction and non-fiction in Year 1…but it’s not all about writing! We also get to dress up for drama activities, and ‘Show and Tell’ is always popular!

Sometimes the older children in the school join us for shared reading.

. ‘ Materials’ is an exciting topic. We carried out an investigation to see which material would be best to clean up a spilt drink. We have learnt that some metals are magnetic. Best of all we built houses that could not be blown down by the big bad wolf!!

We have also been thinking about materials in Art. We have done some weaving using different fabrics and made some very tricky God’s eyes!

After learning about our local area we followed Barnaby Bear to France and then to India. We tasted some French food – but not frogs legs!!

Visitors came to talk to us about India. They dressed up in Indian clothes and we were able to ask them questions that we had written during a Literacy lesson.

We were also lucky enough to taste some Indian food!

Both classes have access to role play. 1SL currently have a ‘Bob the Builder’ area to link with our Science topic. 1GG have a Church to link with our ‘Celebrations’ topic in RE.

In History we learn lots of things about the past. During the Summer term we learn about homes long ago. We visit Killerton House which is brilliant! This is us arriving on a double decker bus! We get to dress up in clothes that the Victorians wear.

We found out how the laundry was done – they didn’t have washing machines! It’s a lovely day but we come home exhausted!
