Studying the Novel The Great Gastby By F. Scott Fitzgerald

Studying the Novel To understand this (or any) novel properly, and to enable you to write about it with knowledge and conviction, you will need to read it at least three times

Reading the Novel Read it first straight through to get the general idea. It is a good idea to keep a journal as you read to record your impressions, responses, thoughts, questions, examples of language features you particularly like, etc.

Reading a second time Then read it again as you work through the task sheets and make notes. Don’t just look for answers to questions; re-read the whole chapter.

Reading a Third time Then, after all the work has been completed, read it right through again. By now you will see and understand so much more, you will be able to appreciate the style and structure, the wealth of detail, the overall picture.

Approaching the Novel Apart from helping you to understand this novel well, if you approach this unit study with a positive frame of mind, you will find it enormously rewarding. Good literature always repays repeated visits!

Enrich your understanding Don’t just rely on class notes and reading. You can enrich your understanding by really understanding the ‘feel’ of the Jazz Age. Try reading Fitzgerald’s other work: ◦This Side of Paradise ◦The Beautiful and the Damned ◦Short Stories which can be found through a great internet search! (look on the Weebly for some links)

The Weebly Use the weebly for links and resources that you have missed in class. Also use it for extras – links to websites or downloads that haven’t been given out in class. Seek and Ye Shall Find!! There are many truths out there.
