Birthday Traditions
The Greeks used to take cakes to the temple of the goddess of the moon. They made the cakes round just like the full moon. They added candles to make it glow like the moon. Germans were the first to celebrate children’s birthdays. They were called Kinderfeste. Kinder means child and feste means party. They also were great candle makers. They made small and large candles. The large candle would be marked with 12 lines and be burned every year. Some people believe that the smoke from the candles would take their wishes up heaven. Today we believe if you blow all the candles out in one breath it will bring you good luck!
