Main Objective The main objective of ACTIVE ACCESS is to increase the use of cycling but especially walking for short everyday trips in local areas, in order to benefit people’s health, and the health of the local economy. It aims to transfer longer car trips to shorter walking and cycling trips by changing people’s mental maps of their local neighbourhoods so that they realise what is available on their doorstep, rather than in the edge of town retail park.

Specific Objectives (1) Save energy through a modal shift from car to walking and cycling Improve public health, by increasing the % of the population who take regular exercise Helping to tackle obesity Strengthen local economies by making key target groups more aware of, and therefore more frequent users of, shopping and leisure opportunities close to their homes

Specific Objectives (2) By strengthening local economies, thus ensuring that services remain close to where people live Build the capacity of partners and followers to implement measures to encourage walking and cycling for short local trips Reduce conflicts/barriers between walking and cycling Raise awareness of and support for walking as a mode of transport

Target Groups Decision Makers like politicians Multipliers like journalists, health institutions, associations etc. End Users - shop / restaurant owners - schools and companies - the general public - etc.

Implementations There will be several implementations in 10 European countries. All partners will carry out a walking audit with local politicians and technicians as a way to raise awareness of walking as a mode of transport.

Implementations in Graz, Austria Application of campaigns to promote walking for senior citizens Welcome packages for new members of the community Exercise prescriptions to enhance physical activities Campaign „First steps” of young citizens

Implementations in Haute-Savoie, France Promotion of cycling and walking to go to local shops and restaurants. Promotion of cycling and walking for recreation and work in the ski resort town of Les Gets Promotion of a walking bus in four schools and awareness raising with others Promotion of cycling and walking to go to work

Implementations in Aveiro, Portugal Promoting of parking areas around the historic district and walking Creating a map of thematic walking routes with the participation of commercial establishments Raising awareness of shopkeepers and restaurant owners for walking as a transport mode and increasing patronage

Implementations in Alba Iulia and Bucharest, Romania Children competitions (cycling, drawing, etc) and short walking/cycling outings Competitions between educational institutions, short walking demonstrations, stands to promote / present walking / cycling benefits for health Street events

Implementations in L’Alcúdia, Spain Promoting walking and cycling to L'Alcudia town centre Promoting walking and cycling to l'Alcudia Schools

Implementations in Tartu, Estonia Sustainable transport education in schools Walking for health - new programmes will be developed with different risk groups Reward programmes of local shopkeepers for walking to their facilities Guided walks for recreation Street safety audit
