College Planning

Community Colleges 2 year and transfer UCs and CSUs take CC transfers before transfers from a 4 year College

I’ll go to SDSU and transfer to UCSD…. WRONG!! You are behind everyone else in priority and may not get in!!! They will probably fill all transfer spots with CC students.

Cons of Community College Commuter school Missing big sports Missing excitement of a 4 year college Need to transfer partway through

Advantages of Community College $$ Class size More choices at transfer time for the same gpa as in high school. Equivalent classes Same degree at end of 4 years

Freedom = Choices Be prepared for CC or a 4 year University Complete a-g coursework Be competitive at CC in the transfer courses Apply to University in Fall; CC in the Spring.

Considering Community College Community College Fair PHS Titan Center - February 2:15pm Take the Placement Exams Spring of Senior Year Meet with a Community College Counselor as soon as possible

Admissions Factors CSUUCPRIVATE COLLEGE a-g classes a-g (many) GPA SAT Reasoning ACT SAT Reasoning ACT with writing SAT Reasoning ACT some with writing Types of classes taken Extra-curricular Personal Essay Interview (some) Letter of Recommendation

College Applications University Website: Admissions Deadlines Requirements UC & CSU Private College/University Consider using Common Application

Common Application 500+ Members Parts of the Application  Freshman Application  Academic Teacher Evaluation (1-2)  Secondary School Report and/or counselor letter of recommendation  Transcript  Test scores (SAT/ACT)  Supplement (possible)  Mid Year Report

Letters of Recommendation Best to make your request in person. Give plenty of advance notice! 3 WORKING WEEKS!! Remember this is a courtesy.

You send them! SAT scorescollegeboard.com ACT scoresactstudent.org Transcriptsparchment.com * Allow 2-3 weeks processing time.

Private College/University Many people think private schools are too expensive… …however they often give more money in grants and scholarships Apply for financial aid when you apply to the school, NOT after you have been accepted!

What is better? You or your parents?

What private schools want to know about you… Take initiative, self starter, mature, concern for others, sense of humor, tolerance, ability to work with others Telling signs of maturity… Do you have the ability to work out solutions on your own and seek advice on your own? Do you take charge of your own life? Do you do things in a timely manner?

Your Job Going into Next Year College List Reach Good Fit Safe Maintain rigorous academic schedule Take math senior year! Update CSU Mentor, UC pathways
