What is the USMC Shooting Team? Established in 1901. “Teams” is made up of: Rifle Team - permanent members & summer augments. Pistol Team - permanent members & summer augments. Combat Shooting Team - permanent members. Speak to how we are one team, and train with rifles & pistols. However, once the summer begins, each team has their own separate schedule through Nationals. CST has been an up & coming team, competes regularly, does 3-gun, & the “SAAM’s”.

Who is on Teams? Any MOS is eligible! T/O: 4 officers, 45 enlisted Currently we have: infantry, aircraft mechanics, AAV crewmen/mechanic, LAAD, SatComm tech, machinist, flight equipment, tank crewman, musician, motor transport operator/mechanic. T/O: 4 officers, 45 enlisted Teams is NOT all combat MOS’s. 2 of best recent shooters were disbursing. We can make a better shooter, but the attitude and mindset must be gtg from the start. Explain that current on hand strength is WAY below where it should be, to include officers. Looking for some shooters to join the team, do NOT have to be leg medal winner in a Div match, just show potential and coachability. Working with monitors at HQMC to grant orders to short MOS’s. Still no guarantees. Now: 3 officers, 26 enlisted

Where We Compete Based out of Quantico, VA Virginia, Tennessee, West Virginia, Ohio, Georgia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Oregon, Delaware, Maine, Oklahoma, and California. Australia and England. Explain where we go, how we travel, what matches we compete in, both in the States & internationally.

Timeline “On season” (Jan to mid Aug) “Off season” (Sep to Dec) 4 Division Matches, MC Championships Summer augments picked up, train at Quantico, travel to State & Regional matches Interservice Nationals “Off season” (Sep to Dec) PME, formal schools (CMC, CMT, FWIC, BIC, SSIS, MOES), annual training Explain a simple, brief timeline of the training & the events we compete in.

Purpose Mission – To enhance the marksmanship proficiency and combat readiness of the Marine Corps by: Developing and maintaining a population base of Marines with high skills in rifle and pistol marksman-ship to serve as marksmanship instructors, scout snipers, coaches and range operation personnel. Stimulating interest and desire on the part of the individual Marine for self-improvement of skill and confidence with the rifle and pistol. Represent the Marine Corps and the Nation at competitions throughout the country and the world. -Competition in Arms Program (CIAP) MCO 3591.2J. (if needed). This is a “let them read it, but talk the basics” type of slide. -Develops and enhances partnership and idea sharing.

Purpose (cont) To gain and maintain a Marine Corps ability to compete and win, as teams and individuals, in interservice and national matches and to provide competitors for United States teams in international matches. To establish a vehicle for the development and exchange of ideas resulting in improvements to equipment and shooting techniques. -Competition in Arms Program (CIAP) MCO 3591.2J. Same thing as previous slide. -Stress first bullet on this slide. May be the sole military representative on a U.S. Team that travels the world competing. Also a chance at Olympic trials and the summer Olympics.

How We Recruit Initial screening is Division & MC Matches. Correct attitude. Where is applicant coming from? Career Marines mainly, 1st termers who re-up. Will orders adversely affect assignment to Teams? (career wise) Next assignment? Willing to travel? First places where we see shooters are at Division. What are their strengths/weaknesses? Must be about the Team and giving back to the Marine Corps, no “Semper I”. Coming from a deployment? Coming from special duty? (Teams is a special duty assignment.) Ensure Marine’s decision to apply will not keep him/her away from MOS credibility. Will they be able to give back what they have learned at future duty station? Dwell time to TAD is close to 2:1. Mention the monitors and that we are working with them to bolster the team with young, fresh talent.

Duties/What to expect -Normal 2 -3 year PCS 1. Train and compete 2. Instruct / coach others to shoot 3. Learn / be open- minded (coachable) -Normal 2 -3 year PCS - (MCC: UAN) As a USMC Shooting Team member, it is expected you are a SME in marksmanship. You must know how to shoot well, and be able to teach others how to shoot. Members must be coachable & be willing to learn different techniques. After your tour, expect to go back to the fleet for MOS credibility. A lot can change in 3 years. Virginia is nice place to live, etc.

Where to start Intramural and Division matches. Summer augments. Talk to one of our instructors. Contact Teams SNCOIC. Send brief shooting bio Begin special duty assignment package through your parent command. Engage Monitor (if Sgt and ↑), we’ll do same Shooting in a Division Match is not required, but let’s us know the applicant understands what a NMC is, a shooting jacket is for, and how a basic competition is run. Summer augments get a better understanding of the schedule & what is required. Speak with our team members while they are there (lot of time to pass in pits). Contact Gunny. Tell them process of how to submit their package. Starts with their command’s Career Retention Specialist (CRS), gets into system, our CRS views it once submitted, we screen it, our CO signs an endorsement letter, we put that letter into package, goes back into system for their command’s CRS to see, they submit to HQMC where they will approve/disapprove based on needs of applicant’s primary MOS. Monitor views it, cuts orders. Only senior guys should be talking with their monitors.
