Using Visual Aids Visual aids can be a very important element of your speech. It’s important to remember three basic tasks when showing a visual aid.

Note Taking  Key points – diagrams, examples, formulae, references  Quality paper and secured – file or booklet  Organise files and store safe place – school and home

Note Taking  Develop your own short hand  Be aware of clues or hints – key words, lists, diagrams, emphasis  Leave plenty of space to make notes now and in the future

Take Notes to Aid Learning u First Stage – w Include the things to do before you come to class eg: (1) Complete all assigned readings u Second Stage – w Include the things you do during class eg: (2) Use abbreviations and symbols to increase note taking speed

Take Notes to Aid Learning u Third Stage – w Include the things to do after class eg: Compare your notes with those of other students (3) make sure your notes are complete and as accurate as possible.

Use Abbreviations When Note Taking  One way to (4) increase your note taking speed is to write using abbreviations.  Develop you own short hand for words or common phrases.

Dictionaries  The dictionary provides information about the:  (13) meaning, pronunciation and spelling of a word

Thesaurus  A thesaurus is a (14) reference source that contains synonyms for common used words.  A synonym is a word that has same (or nearly the same) meaning as another word.

Encyclopaedia  An Encyclopaedia (15) contains articles on a variety of subjects written by experts.  Encyclopaedias in printed book format may be multi-volume or single-volume.

Almanac u An Almanac (16) is a single-volume reference source that contains: w facts, w data, w charts, w lists and other w methods of presenting useful information.

Atlas u An Atlas (17) is a collection of maps. u A common type of atlas contains maps that show the physical and political features of countries throughout the world.
